Merced paper talking about rising stock

Jeff Ellis: Jake Sisco is a right handed pitcher, who pitched for Merced junior college in California. He was drafted by the Giants out of high school in the 34th round last year. He has shot up draft boards this year as his fastball has gained velocity. He has been a helium player all year. He throws 92-95, and has a slider, curve, and changeup. John Sickel’s considered him one of the bigger sleepers in this draft and a potential steal. When you read up on him you have to love his attitude and the fact that his strikeouts go up as the game goes on, and that he has been a pitcher who gets stronger as games go on. This is also part of the problem; Sisco needs to be coached up and taught to settle down a bit and not be so amped up in games. Some might be upset that we got a signable arm here, but Sisco is a nice sleeper pick who has 4 pitches and good size at 6’3”. He is growing, getting stronger, and most people think there is a lot more velocity still to unlock in his arm.  A very interesting pick by the Indians in the draft.

Andrew Zajac: To be honest, I don't know a ton about the kid. I've read a lot of reports where his stock was rising towards the end of the season. It appears the Indians did indeed go safe with their third round pick as many experts believe he should be an easy sign. He was originally drafted in the 34th round by the Giants out of high school, but he says the money wasn't right to make the jump. Scouts say he has four above-average pitches and demonstrates good command.

Indians press release:

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has selected RHP JAKE SISCO with their third round pick (97th overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Sisco, 19, is a 6-3, 200-pound right handed pitcher from Merced College (CA). This past year he went 11-1 with a 1.66 ERA in 15 games (14GS, 108.1IP, 72H, 20ER, 33BB, 124K, .189AVG), leading state junior college pitchers in wins, innings and strikeouts as he helped lead Merced College to the Central Valley Conference Title as a freshman. He was named to the 1st Team All-CVC, the CVC Pitcher of the Year and was also a NorCal All-American and the NorCal Pitcher of the Year.

Last year, the Salida, CA native was selected in the 37th round (1128th overall) by the San Francisco Giants after going 9-3 w/a 1.00 ERA and 114 strikeouts at Grace Davis High School (CA), but opted to attend Mercer College.
