In the 16th round of the 2012 Draft the Indians have selected right-handed pitcher Cody Penny out of the University of North Carolina.

Date of birth: 5/15/1991 - Height: 6'3" - Weight: 205 - Bats: Right - Throws: Right

Bio: UNC player page

Quick take: Penny looks to be a pen arm in the minors as he has shown the stuff to be a dominant reliever at the college level. He has pitched in 48 career college cames, starting two of them, and has thrown just 41.1 innings with a 5.67 ERA (26 BB, 47 K). He has a fastball that touches the mid-90s and a good spike curve, so if the Indians can develop his delivery and command he has some interesting stuff as a pen arm.

Jeff Ellis: Cody Penny is junior from North Carolina University. He has said that he throws a knuckle curve, change, and slider along with his fastball. His fastball runs in the high 80’s and low 90’s. He has been primarily a reliever through out his time at UNC. He has put up an impressive strikeout rate at over 10 strikeouts per nine innings, but he has also struggled with his WHIP of 1.67 and ERA of 5.66 over his career. If there is something the Indians have done very well over the past few years it is scout relievers, so it will be interesting to see what they do with penny if they can get him signed.
