With their 10th round pick in the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected second baseman Ross Kivett out of Kansas State.

Born: 10/19/1991 – Height: 6’1” – Weight: 195 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right

Tony’s quick take: The Indians took a local product here as Kivett is from Lakewood, Ohio and went to St. Edward’s where he was in the same class as Alex Lavisky and Stetson Allie. The bat jumped this year as he showed more power and more bat to ball. He has a disciplined approach where he will take walks and limit strikeouts, and he also has some speed on the basepaths.

Jeff Ellis: Ross Kivett is the player I got the most questions on far and away this draft season. I tend to think it is because he was a St. Ed's graduate a lot of people remember or went to school with him. He was not on anyone's top 500 list. He is a guy who is more defined and doesn't have the upside and tools,  and that's why in spite of his production he did not go higher.  He should be a utility player long term, and I think moves quickly. His best tool is his speed. That along with his work ethic and drive have to be what made him attractive to the Indians. He is only the second hitter the Indians have drafted thus far.

Press release:

The junior infielder is hitting .363 (90-248) with 13 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 39 RBI, 26 steals and 54 runs scored for the Wildcats this year and was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. K-State plays in the Super Regional this weekend against Oregon State in Corvallis.

Kivett lettered three year at St. Edwards High School in Lakewood under Danny Allie and was a first team All-Northeast Ohio selection in 2010 after hitting .458 as a senior, leading the Eagles to the Ohio State baseball title while also earning all-state honors in hockey.

I knew his name sounded familiar, a local player from St. Edwards'. Player of the year in the Big 12 Conference is high praise. Looks like a real good pick in 10th round.
