In the 15th round of the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians select shortstop James Roberts from USC.

Born: 12/11/1991 – Height: 6’2” – Weight: 200 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right

Pre-draft ranks:

Baseball America: 483rd
Perfect Game: 496th

Jeff Ellis: Roberts is a guy who was more well thought of coming out of high school than he is after three years at USC. He switched to play third this year and had a solid season.  He really struggled at shortstop and it might have stunted his growth as a player.  I had not heard this but Baseball America said he might be better as pitcher in the long run. I am sure the Indians will let him see what he can do as a hitter, but they might move him back to the mound if he fails as a hitter. It is an easier progression that way.
