With their 8th round pick in the 2013 Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected right-handed pitcher Trevor Frank out of UC-Riverside (CA).

Born: 06/23/1991 – Height: 6’0” – Weight: 195 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right

Pre-draft rank:

Baseball America: 294th
Perfect Game: 416th

Tony’s quick take: You knew this was coming near the bottom the end of the bonus pool rounds as the Indians selected Frank who is their first college senior selection. This is a slam dunk signing and he should be inked very quickly and well underslot so the Indians have extra money for their higher upside prep players they drafted earlier. He will probably slot right into the bullpen at Mahoning Valley, or could maybe be stretched out to a starter if the Indians wish to go that route with him.

Jeff Ellis: Trevor Frank is a senior who is undersized and throws in the low 90's. He is unranked, but has proven himself as a player who has been a steady backend guy. He was a starter at first so he could move quick, and he is what he is at this point. The upside is that he is used to pressure since he went to one of the powerhouse high schools in Georgia before becoming a backend pen guy in college. This is a pick that screams way underslot. He is not a backend pen guy, so the basic hope is he can be more of a 6/7 inning guy.

Press release:

The senior, 6’0”, 195-pound right-handed pitcher went 4-2 with 10 saves and a 2.45ERA in 26 relief outings (44.0IP, 37H, 12ER, 9BB, 44K, .215AVG).  He is currently on the mid-season watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, and recently posted a string of 22.2 consecutive innings w/o allowing an earned run for the Highlanders.  The El Cajon, CA native is a 2009 graduate of Valhalla High School.

Very familar with this guy. Indians have a steal. He is a strike thrower. Works very fast and has great tempo. Should be on the fast track.

To me the whole draft other than Frazier seems to scream "underslot". What a terrible draft, lefties who throw below 90 and RH pitchers who are "sinker/slider". We have been doing this for years and how many starting pitchers have we drafted made it to the show?????

I saw this guy pitch a few times. When he hits his spots he can go deep in anybodies line up.
