With their 8th round pick in the 2014 Draft the Cleveland Indians have selected right-handed pitcher Micah Miniard out of Boyle County High School (KY).

Born: 4/12/1996 – Height: 6’7” – Weight: 195 – Bats: Right – Throws: Right

Baseball America: 393

Jeff Ellis: Micah Miniard is a very interesting arm, considered by most the top prep arm in the state of Kentucky. He is a huge right hander at 6’7” who sits in the mid 80’s but hit 94 this year. Any kid with his size obviously needs to fill out and this is clearly a kid who has an excellent chance to add some velocity. His best pitch is his curveball which flashes plus, but his fastball has some deception in it thanks to his late release from his long frame. This is clearly another upside gamble by the Indians. Miniard has the size and stuff to be a starter, but he has also had some consistency issues. He is a player who will be signed and coached up and I am sure they will work on strengthening as well. I like this pick. Miniard is an interesting talent and worth the risk, especially if he signs for right around slot.

Press release: The 6-foot-7 right handed pitcher struck out 76 batters in 56.1 innings of work as a junior at Boyle County High School, winning five games, including a no-hitter, while posting an ERA of 2.24. This past season he also won five games, with a 1.76 ERA and once again has 76 strikeouts in 56.1 innings…Signed to play at Western Kentucky… Named a 2013 Under Armour All-American and pitched in the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field this past summer.

great kid !! loves the game and works hard. Hope he can make it to the big league !! If he can get his consistency to where he needs it, then he can be a great fit for any club. Really hard worker of the game. Gave up basketbal to pursue his dream of playing major league baseball-- We wish him the best of luck !!

Micah Miniard could be a good selection.. Has some of the tools and skills that you look for.. he's tall and has some physical maturity with more to come (6'7", 220).. Has a FB that has a nice downward plane that sits in the upper 80's to low 90's and late biting breaking ball.. He's a Western Kentucky University commit, but is willing to start his pro career.. What I like most about him is he is an introspective and intelligent young man who performs very well in school and raises his game when he's facing the better and best competition.. Says he has heart.. and that is a commodity in the 8th round that is rare and precious...

Good pick...
