5-3 win earns Captains split with Loons

The Loons attempted to come back strong from their 11-4 loss to the Captains Monday night, but the Captains didn't allow it, grabbing themselves a 5-3 victory and splitting the series 2-2 with the Loons. 

The first three innings passed with little action and, until the Loons started really swinging in the top of the fourth. 

Two runs started things off, coming from first baseman Tyler Ogleand catcher Webster Rivas. The Captains couldn't answer in the bottom of the fourth, and right fielder Jeremy Rathjen added a third run for the Loons, slamming a home run in the top of the fifth, giving them the 3-0 lead. 

The Captains had five hits, while the Loons racked up ten, and both team's had an error. 

Dylan Baker started on the mound for the Captains, he played through six innings, allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out two. Cody Penny came in to relieve Baker at the top of the seventh, he allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one. Jack Wagoner came it at the top of the eighth to relieve Penny, he allowed one hit and struck out two. Grant Sides came in to close for the Captains and made the save.

16-year-old Julio Urias started things off for the Loons, but only pitched one perfect inning. Geoff Brown came in to start the second inning, and he allowed one hit and struck out five. 

Thomas Taylor came in to relieve Brown with two outs in the bottom of the seventh., and only threw three pitches. The third pitch was a single for Todd Hankins, scoring Logan Vick and Eric Haase to bring the Captains within one, 3-2.  

"It was some timely hitting, some guys being very patient," said manager Scooter Tucker. "I think we had two hits going into that inning, but again it's timely hitting and patience."

After pulling Taylor and with two outs, Jorge Martinez stepped up and slammed a homer out to left field off Crayton Bare, scoring Zach MacPhee, Todd Hankins and himself to take the 5-3 lead and grab the victory. 

The Captains take a three game road trip to Dayton, then return to Classic Park on Saturday at 7pm to take on Bowling Green in a three game series.
