Last year the IBI's Jeff Ellis did a feature on the top prospects in the state of Ohio. This year’s class is stronger at the top but the depth is not where it was last year, though there are still plenty of interesting players and a few familiar names from last year as well. Jeff found nine guys to talk about this year that he had some familiarity with and he shares his thoughts on all of them in his latest...

The Zips have made the NCAA tournament once way back in 1996, which was the last time they won the MAC championship. Over the last 12 years the Zips have managed two seasons with a winning record, and have not had a .500 record in the MAC in the last 12 years. The IBI's Jeff Ellis talks about an emerging Akron club that is set to square off with Kent State this weekend.

The Major League Baseball draft is the biggest and most complicated in all of sports. It has a long and very interesting history, most of which has been based on the idea of keeping player salaries lower, and has gone through so many changes over the years that the IBI's Jeff Ellis often finds the rules are misunderstood. Jeff takes a look at how the draft was started and reviews how it works today.

The IBI's Jeff Ellis has gone on record saying that he is a big fan of this year’s draft. It is partially because last years had so little depth, but it is because to him this is the deepest draft in years. The Indians have three picks in the Top 40 and four picks in the Top 65, so they stand a chance to get a lot of talent this season. Jeff has put together his first Big Board of the draft season with rankings and reports on the top 41 players in the draft.

The college baseball season is entering its third month, and things are definitely starting to shape up. The top talents on both the high school and college level are asserting themselves, while other players are sliding some. Maybe it is just because of how weak last year was, but every week Jeff Ellis is more and more impressed by this class. Join Jeff as he releases his third mock draft.

Jeff Ellis has been working on draft information at Indians Baseball Insider for a few years. Of late he has focused quite a bit on the historical side of the draft and how the Indians have done. The common refrain when he has dipped into the past is that the Indians have really struggled at drafting, yet he was unsure if that was true as he was not certain of the success of every other team. So he decided he needed to figure out a system to compare every team in Major League Baseball and came up with some research for all 30 teams over the last 30 years that shows who has shined or struggled in the draft the last two decades.

Jeff goes into detail on each of Cleveland's first three picks and analyzes why these players fit Cleveland's mold and could become a part of the organization this June.

The college baseball season began President's Day weekend. The Kent State flashes play Arizona, ranked 33rd to start the year. The Flashes won’t play at home till the end of March which makes perfect sense to anyone who has stepped outside in this frigid Ohio weather recently. The IBI's Jeff Ellis previews the Kent State Flashes, a baseball team loaded with potential draft picks this June.

The greatest draft in Indians history happened in 1989. Hank Peters was in his second year as general manager and he ended up with a draft for the ages. The Indians selected 55 players that year and 14 made it to the majors for a success rate of about 25%. This success is even more interesting when you take a step back and look at the big picture of this draft, which the IBI's Jeff Ellis goes into detail about.
