Morris Pitching Well Beyond His Years In Lake County
A little over a week ago, Lake County put the finishing touches on a first half division championship in the South Atlantic League (SAL). One of the players directly responsible for that championship is left-handed starter Ryan Morris, who in 13 first half starts went 6-1 with a 2.50 ERA.
Morris, 20, has held his own in a league where he is about two years under the league average age of 22....

Kinston Gives Lead Up in the Ninth, Wins with a Walk-off in the 10th
The Kinston Indians gave up eight runs in four innings, but Alex Castillo bailed them out with a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th to win it for the K-Tribe.
The Indians had a pair of three-run innings in the first and third and capped off the scoring with solo home runs from Beau Mills and Jared Goedert...

Former Ivy Leaguer Stiller Enjoying Success In Minors
Erik Stiller is not your ordinary pitching prospect.
You see, Stiller is a graduate from the prestigious Ivy League school Princeton University. He graduated cum laude with a degree in Economics at the age of 21, and upon graduation had lucrative job offering after job offering thrown at him.
But, Stiller had other ideas.
Stiller always had a dream to play professional baseball...

LHP Kelvin De la Cruz was promoted to Akron on Saturday for what looks like was just for a spot start. Akron had a doubleheader and De La Cruz pitched Game Two going five innings and giving up four runs on four hits, three hits and struckout four. RHP Paolo Espino replaced De La Cruz on the Lake County roster. This should just be a temporary move, but I wonder....
By the way, Akron outfielder...

After a slow start to the season where they were 17-21 as of May 19th, the Akron Aeros have been on a roll lately. Winners of 16 of their 17 games and 26-6 since then, Akron has charged full bore into first place of the Eastern League's Southern Division. At 43-27 overall, Akron now owns a three game lead in the division.
While several good offensive performances and some good starting pitching...

Left-hander Tony Sipp is back in action. After missing all of last season and half of this season recovering from an arm injury and subsequent Tommy John suregery, Sipp made his season debut on Friday with the GCL team going one shutout inning with a walk and strikeout. He'll likely be sent on a rehab assignment to Mahoning Valley or Lake County in the next week or two.
Also, catcher Matt McBride...

Davis Makes Position Change To Catcher
If at first you don't succeed, try another position.
At least that is the case for Indians prospect Adam Davis. Davis is a 2006 third round draft pick out of the University of Florida who has played middle infield almost his entire baseball career. When he came into the system in 2006, at short-season Mahoning Valley he played 49 games at second base and 16 games at shortstop. Last year at...

The Indians signed two more draft picks on Thursday: 24th round pick Kevin Fontanez INF and 25th round pick Steve Smith RHP. The Indians have now signed 17 of their 50 draft picks.
Akron catcher Chris Gimenez got a well deserved callup to Buffalo, and catcher Wyatt Toregas was reassigned to Akron. This is a move that should help both players.

Minor Happenings: Gimenez Is Tearing It Up
"Minor Happenings" covers the important developments and news in the Indians farm system. While most of the information in this report is from my own research and through interviews I have conducted with organizational personnel, some information in this report is collected and summarized from the various news outlets that cover each team.
Several pieces are in the pipeline which I hope to...

Right-hander Josh Tomlin and infielder Niuman Romero were selected to the Carolina League All-Star roster on Wednesday. Five members of the Carolina League All-Star team will not participate due to organizational call-ups, including Kinston pitcher Steven Wright, and Tomlin and Romero were chosen as two of the replacements.
Also, right-hander Paolo Espino has been re-activated in Kinston. Word...

The moves I mentioned yesterday of Steven Wright and Jim Deters being promoted from Kinston to Akron have been made official. Shawn Nottingham was reassigned from Akron to Kinston, and right-hander Michael Finocchi was activated from extended spring training and assigned to Kinston. Finocchi was rehabbing from a broken foot.

Just a quick note to mention Steven Wright and Jim Deters have been promoted to Akron and Shawn Nottingham sent to Kinston. Chuck Lofgren, as expected, was sent to Winter Haven (extended spring training) to "clear his head". No word on who fills the rotation spot left void in Kinston with Wright leaving, but a good bet would be Lake County lefty Ryan Miller getting the promotion.
Anyway, short-season...

Akron left-hander Chuck Lofgren has been put on the temporary inactive list, and may be out for awhile. Lofgren is not injured, but his psyche may be, so the Indians have shut him down temporarily and will continue to work with him behind the scenes to overcome some of the mental blocks which have plagued him this year. With Lofgren being shutdown, look for RHP Steven Wright to be promoted from Kinston...
