Toledo drops Clippers 7-3
The Clippers fell 7-3 in Toledo on the fourth of July.
Tony Graffanino duplicated the feat of Michael Brantley from the previous day with a first inning homer for a 1-0 lead. Zack Jackson got through the first inning unscathed, but gave up a solo bomb to Jeff Larrish to tie the game in the second.
The Hens scored four times in the third inning to break...

Editor's note: Andrew Zajac was at Eastwood Field on Friday night to see the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in action and shares his thoughts on the game and what he saw.
I attended the July 3rd game in Niles, OH and to my surprise saw Ross Atkins there and gave him a, "How's it going, Ross?"
Anyway, on to the notes:
RHP Marty Popham got the starting nod and pitched a dandy of a...

Aeros Turn First Triple Play in 3-2 Defeat
Akron turned a triple play for the first time in franchise history Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium, yet the superb defense wasn’t enough as Bowie claimed the finale of the five-game series 3-2. The Baysox improved to 45-36 while the Aeros lost for the fifth time in seven games and slipped to 52-28.
The triple play came in the bottom...

I don't typically post news and notes on major league guys here, but this is just a quick not that right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt has been sent to Columbus today and has started his minor league rehab assignment. Rehab assignments in the minors for pitchers can last up to 30 days. He should be in uniform and available tonight.
Also, left-hander Aaron Laffey and right-hander Fausto...

Clippers crush Toledo
The Clippers snapped a seven game losing streak with a 16-3 rout of Toledo. Matt LaPorta hit a grand slam to highlight an eight run first inning. Five runs scored before an out was recorded and the first seven Clippers reached base and scored. Michael Brantley singled and scored twice in the inning, bringing in two runs.
LaPorta led off the second with a double...

Paul and I are back with another edition of Smoke Signals tonight. While the Indians are off today, there is certainly a lot going on as they made some roster moves and more may be coming. Also, since we were last on the air the Indians have made a few trades, lost 5 of 6, and Eric Wedge's days as manager appear to be numbered. We'll talk some about a potential Cliff Lee trade and if it makes sense...

Wow, this is a surprise. The Indians today traded RHP John Meloan to Tampa Bay for RHP Winston Abreu. I had a gut feeling something was up with Meloan, which is why I was quick to get that piece on him up this week as soon as possible. In any case, good luck to Meloan with Tampa.
Here is the official release:
The Cleveland Indians today announced they have acquired RHP WINSTON ABREU...

While not official, the Indians supposedly are close to signing or have already signed former Baltimore minor league pitching prospect LHP Bobby Livingston. He was cut recently from their Double-A Bowie roster, and conveniently the Indians Double-A Akron team is in town where it appears he will slot for now.
So why is this potential signing noteworthy? Well, considering the lack of pitching...

Fausto Carmona took the mound in a "rehab" start on Tuesday night in Bowie for the Indians Double-A Akron affiliate. Carmona's final line in the rain-shortened complete game was 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB and 5 K's on just 80 pitches. Out of those 80 pitches, 59 were strikes and two of the five strikeouts were looking. Carmona worked up in the zone to contact, and the result was a good but not amazing 10:6...

A decision on Triple-A Columbus third baseman Andy Marte is coming very soon. Possibly as soon as tomorrow or Friday. That decision could be to trade/release him or call him up. Tonight, Marte went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and two RBI. On the season he is now hitting .319 with 10 HR, and 44 RBI.
Columbus opening day third baseman Wes Hodges has been sidelined with a wrist and shoulder...

Clippers crushed
Columbus opened a two-game series against Toledo with a 12-4 loss. It was the seventh consecutive loss and 17th in the last 21 games for the Clippers. Chuck Lofgren allowed two home runs in the first four innings before unraveling in the fifth. Lofgren walked three batters, two of which scored, and allowed six runs on four hits. He finished the night after that inning, allowing...

I mentioned this on one of the message boards on Saturday night, but there was some concern that Lewis' season may be over as his pain in the elbow has not gone away and he was possibly going to go see Dr. James Andrews this week. Well, supposedly Lewis is in fact visiting Dr. James Andrews, reputed Tommy John specialist. Good news or not, his season appears over.

Major League Baseball is truly an international game. It has the first-year player draft of US and Canadian players that was just completed in June this year. Almost all Indians

Durham finishes sweep of Clippers
Durham finished a sweep of the Clippers 9-6 Tuesday night at Huntington Park.
The Durham Bulls hammered four homers against Columbus pitching. The Clippers have lost six straight and 16 of the last 20 games.
Matt Joyce was the catalyst for the Bulls, collecting four hits in five at bats. In the fifth inning, Joyce hit, unofficially, the longest...
