Aeros blast Rock Cats 13-4
AKRON – The Akron Aeros offense unloaded on the New Britain Rock Cats with a 13-4 win on Friday night.
Right-hander Will Roberts (5-4, 4.58) received the start for the Aeros against New Britain righty Tom Stuifbergen (1-1, 11.68).
The Rock Cats scored first as first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a one-out triple in the second inning and scored on a single by right fielder Daniel Ortiz.
Not to be outdone, the Aeros responded immediately in their share of the inning. With one out, centerfielder Tyler Holt and third baseman Giovanny Urshela drew back-to-back walks. Both runners advanced on a fly-out and scored as left fielder Quincy Latimore singled. Cue second baseman Jose Ramirez, who hit his third home run of the season to right, giving the Aeros the 4-1 advantage.
Akron plated one more in the third as right fielder Carlos Moncrief doubled and scored on a single by Holt. Both teams added to their total in the fourth inning, New Britain striking first as Rodriguez led off with a solo home run. Ortiz followed with a double and advanced on a wild pitch before Danny Santana singled and scored Ortiz, cutting the Aeros’ lead to 4-3.
Catcher Jake Lowery mimicked the Rock Cats’ response as he also led off Akron’s half of the inning with a solo shot to right. Latimore followed with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt before shortstop Ronny Rodriguez singled to center to score Latimore. That ended the outing for Stuifbergen as he was replaced with B. J. Hermsen. After Rodriguez swiped second base, first baseman Jesus Aguilar doubled home Ronny Rodriguez, giving the Aeros the 8-3 lead.
Third baseman Miguel Sano worked to keep the Rock Cats within reach as he homered to right to cut the deficit in half in the fifth, but the Aeros refused to back down as they scored four. With one out, Latimore drew a walk and stole second before scoring on a single by Ramirez. Ronny Rodriguez and designated hitter Cedric Hunter laced a pair of consecutive singles to score Ramirez. With two, Moncrief sent a triple deep to center to empty the bags and give the Aeros the 12-4 lead.
Roberts was replaced after the fifth inning as he gave way to Enosil Tejeda, closing Roberts’ line at five innings, surrendering four runs on 11 hits and one strikeout.
A two-out error proved costly for the Rock Cats in the seventh as Aguilar singled and advanced to third on a throwing error by the shortstop. Holt capitalized on the error as he singled to center, scoring Aguilar to give the Aeros their final run of the evening.
Meanwhile, the Aeros’ bullpen tossed a line of zeros across the board through the remainder of the game. Tejeda, Blake Wood, C.C. Lee and Trey Haley all tossed a scoreless inning apiece to preserve the Aeros with the 13-4 win.
Next, the Aeros turn to Toru Murata (3-3, 3.44)to counter New Britain righty Virgil Vasquez (2-6, 5.28), who was recently sent down from triple-A Rochester.
