Aeros fall to Seawolves, 7-5
Akron, OH – Akron’s Nick Weglarz hit a pair of home runs and finished with four RBIs, Wednesday, but the Aeros fell to the Erie SeaWolves, 7-5, in the final game of a three-game series at Canal Park.
The SeaWolves (14-17) avoided the sweep, and dealt Aeros starter Giovanni Soto (3-1) his first loss of the season. The Aeros (21-9) had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Erie built a 7-0 lead in the game, starting with three runs in the fourth off Soto. Bryan Pounds and Jamie Johnson had RBI singles in the inning. After making it 4-0 and chasing Soto from the game after five, the Wolves tacked on three more in the sixth off Aeros reliever Toru Murata.
Enter Weglarz, who stroked a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, his second of the season and first of the game. The homers continued for Akron, as Adam Abraham added a solo shot in the seventh to make it 7-4, and Weglarz led off the eighth with a blast into the bullpen in right to make it 7-5.
Erie’s Michael Morrison worked the final two innings to shut down the Aeros comeback and post his second save. Starter Ramon Garcia (1-2) earned the win for Erie.
An Education Day crowd of 8,871 watched Wednesday’s game. It was the largest crowd to see an Aeros game this season, home or road.
The Aeros will continue the homestand on Thursday night at 7:05, when they welcome in the Harrisburg Senators for the start of a four-game series at Canal Park. RHp Jeff Mandel (3-1, 2.97) is the scheduled starter for Harrisburg, while LHP T.J. McFarland (5-1, 2.62) is slated to get the ball for Akron.
