NEW BRITAIN - On a night where the game was long, hits were plentiful, and runs were few and far between, the Akron Aeros found a way to scrape past the New Britain Rock Cats 3-2 in 12 innings on Thursday night.

The Aeros notched their second consecutive win behind a balanced attack from their offense, as eight of the ten Aeros batters had a hit, none bigger than the two delivered by Ben Copeland and Roberto Perez in the game’s final frame.

In the top of the 12th inning, Ben Copeland delivered a one-out single, stole second and scored on a base hit by Roberto Perez for the late lead and what proved to be the winning run.

The Rock Cats got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the lead was short-lived, as Akron tied the game on a two-run homer by Nick Weglarz off of Rock Cats pitcher Brett Jacobson in the fourth. Those were the only runs Akron would muster off Jacobson, who limited the Aeros to three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

New Britain (35-29) accounted for 14 of the 21 total hits in the game, but were unable to produce run support for a quality outing from Jacobson. They also wasted a Herculean effort from left fielder-third baseman Nate Hanson, who went 5-for-6 and fell a home run shy of the cycle. He had three singles, one double, one triple, and also scored a run.

Aeros starter Paolo Espino was rocked for ten hits, but allowed just two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Loek Van Mil added 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the Aeros' bullpen. Kyle Landis (4-1) picked up the win with two shutout innings. Jose De La Torre notched his first save of the season.

The victory keeps Akron (41-21) in first place in the Western Division, with a comfortable 8.5 game cushion over second place Harrisburg.
