(Akron, OH) July 28, 2014 – In a key EL West showdown, it was the Bowie Baysox that came out on top with a 12-4 victory over the Akron RubberDucks on Monday evening at Canal Park.

With the loss, Akron (59-51) remains in second place in the EL West, 6 1⁄2 games behind the Richmond Flying Squirrels, who won at Harrisburg. The Baysox are in possession of third place, and now trail the RubberDucks by only 3 1⁄2 games going into game two of the series on Tuesday night.

Shawn Morimando (1-2) made his third start for the Ducks, and, unfortunately, the third time was not the charm. In his three innings, Morimando allowed seven hits, five earned runs, walked four batters and ultimately was charged with the loss.

Adam Miller relieved Morimando in hopes of shutting down the Bowie offense, but on a night when Bowie cranked out 20 hits, Miller allowed six hits and five earned runs, one of which was a homer byNiuman Romero, in his inning on the bump.

Erik Gonzalez was the lone offensive bright spot for Akron, going 3-4. It was his seventh multi-hit game in his first 11 games with the RubberDucks, and second consecutive three-hit game.

Akron plated three in the first, taking an early 3-2 lead over the Baysox. Bowie was quick to respond in the third, sending three men across the plate to regain the lead, 5-3. The Baysox doubled their runs in the fourth, scoring five more and extending their lead to 10-3.

Bowie starter Anthony Vasquez (6-6) earned the win following his six innings on the mound. He allowed six hits, four runs, walked one batter and struck out four. Righty Marcel Prado worked the final three innings and picked up his fourth save.

The Akron RubberDucks will take on the Bowie Baysox in the second game of the series Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. Rightly Toru Murata (5-3) will start for Akron, and right-hander Zach Davies (6-6) will take the mound for the Baysox. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and
