Akron RubberDucks lose to Reading Fightin Phils, 3-2, in 12 innings

(Akron, Ohio) May 24, 2014 – The Akron RubberDucks and Reading Fightin Phils played 12 innings for the second night in a row at Canal Park in Saturday evening’s game, with the Phils claiming their second win in the series, 3-2.

The RubberDucks were the first on the board after four and a half scoreless innings with a two-run single by Joe Wendle. Reading’sEverett Williams put the Fightin Phils on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, making the

score 2-1. A sacrifice fly by Brock Stassi in the eighth tied the game, 2-2.

A sacrifice bunt by Williams combined with a throwing error by Akron closer Jordan Cooper (4-1) broke the tie in the 12th, giving Reading a 3-2 advantage. Reading closer Hector Neris(2-0) pitched the final three innings of the game for the Fightins, earning the win.

Akron starter Cody Anderson threw six and one-third innings for the Ducks, his longest outing on the season. Anderson kept Reading at bay his entire time on the mound, allowing five hits, struck out four batters, and retiring nine consecutive Phils in the second through fifth innings.

Cooper was charged with the loss for Akron, pitching one inning, allowing one hit and one run.

Phils’ starter Perci Garner threw six innings for Reading, allowing seven hits, two unearned runs and two walks.Colton Murray relieved Garner and pitch the remainder of the regulation innings for the Fightin’ Phils.

The Akron RubberDucks and Reading Fightin’ Phills will return to Canal Park Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for their third meeting in the fourth-game series. Toru Murata (3-0, 1.66) will start for the Ducks, and Ryan Demmin (0-0, 4.26) will take the mound for the Phils.
