Akron RubberDucks rally to beat New Britain Cats, 3-2

(Akron, OH) August 5, 2014 – A two-RBI double by Jordan Smithpaired with a seven-inning outing by Duke von Schamann gave the Akron RubberDucks the momentum for a comeback 3-2 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats on Tuesday evening at Canal Park.

A homer parked by Reynaldo Rodriguez gave the Rock Cats (55-59) an early 2-0 lead in the first. The pair of runs would be New Britain’s only in the evening.

The Ducks (62-55), came back to knot the game in the third, when a 2-RBI double off the bat of Smith sent Anthony Gallas andBryan LaHair home. Gallas continued to go 2-3 following a 3-RBI outing on Sunday.

A RBI double by Erik Gonzalez put Akron ahead of New Britain, sending Justin Toole across the plate, making the score 3-2. The Gonzalez RBI double extended his hitting streak to 16 games, after a 4-5 outing in Sunday’s game.

Alex Lavisky nurtured a budding hitting steak, reaching base for the sixth consecutive game with a single in the eighth. Michael Bourn began his rehab appearance with the RubberDucks, spending five innings at centerfield. Bourn did not

make it onto base, and stranded three runners on base.

Akron starter von Schamann (6-6) earned the win, following a seven-inning appearance. The righty allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out four.

RubberDucks reliever Elvis Araujo tossed one inning, allowing no runs, one walk and striking out two. This marks Araujo’s eighth straight scoreless outing. Closer Shawn Armstrong pitched the final inning for the Ducks, striking out three batters to earn his 13th save.

The loss was charged to New Britain’s starter Jason Wheeler (2-4). The lefty threw six innings, allowed seven hits, three runs, walked two batters and struck out four.

The Akron RubberDucks will continue the three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Right-hander Joe Colon (8-6) will start for Akron, and Righty Virgil Vasquez (5-6) will take the mound for the Rock Cats. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and
