Akron RubberDucks split doubleheader with Bowie Baysox
(Bowie, Md.) May 28, 2014 – Righthander Jordan Cooperdominated the Bowie Baysox over five shutout innings in game two of a doubleheader Wednesday night, leading the Akron RubberDucks to a 5-1 victory and a split in the twinbill at Prince George’s Stadium.
The victory in game two, coupled with Bowie’s 3-1 win in game one, leaves the RubberDucks with a three-game lead in the EL West.
Making his first start of the season after 15 relief appearances, Cooper retired the first 13 batters he faced, and took a perfect game into the fifth inning. After recording the first out in the fifth, he walked K.D. Kang and gave up a hit to Garabez Rose. He then worked out of the inning by inducing a fielder’s choice by Sharlon Schoop and striking out David Freitas.
Cooper (5-1) struck out a season-high six batters while facing two over the minimum. His five wins tie him for second in the EL.
The RubberDucks (32-20) scored four times in the fourth inning against lefty Anthony Vasquez (0-4), who gave up a lead- off double to Joe Wendle and then proceeded to walk the next three hitters. Ronny Rodriguez added a run-scoring double as the Ducks jumped out to 4-0 lead. Rodriguez added another RBI double in the sixth.
Cooper gave way to righty Adam Miller for the final two innings. Miller retired the side in order in the sixth, but in the seventh, a walk, double and throwing error in the seventh allowed a run and wrecked the shutout bid.
In game one, the Baysox (29-23) scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie, and grab a 3-1 win. They hung the loss on Akron starter Will Roberts (4-6), who allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The RubberDucks and Baysox will conclude the series on Thursday evening at 6:35. RHP Duke von Schamann (1-0, 2.97) will start for Akron, while RHP Zach Davies (1-1, 3.12) is the expected starter for Bowie.
