(Portland, Maine) August 14, 2014 – Akron’s Jaime Pedrozalaunched a solo home run leading off the seventh and final inning in game two of Thursday’s doubleheader at Portland, setting the stage for a 1-0 RubberDucks victory over the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.

Thanks to Pedroza’s homer, his first in the Indians organization, the RubberDucks completed a sweep of the doubleheader—having won the first game, 4-2. It also lifted Akron to its first three-game series sweep at Portland since 2009. Most importantly, it handed the RubberDucks their fourth straight victory, and pulled the club to within a half-game of first place Richmond. The Flying Squirrels were scheduled to play a doubleheader at New Hampshire Thursday evening.

With the teams locked in a scoreless tie, Pedroza, playing in just his seventh game with the RubberDucks since signing as a free agent out of the independent Atlantic League, ripped a 1-1 pitch from Justin Haley (0-2) into the club seats overlooking right field. It was only the sixth hit given up in the game by Haley, Portland’s game two starter.

Louis Head (1-1) earned the win, working the final two innings for Akron (69-56). After giving up a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh to Ryan Dent, head struck out Mike Brenly and induced a double-play grounder by Kevin Heller to end it. Head took over in the sixth for starter Cody Anderson, who worked five shutout innings and held Portland (75-50) to two hits.

In game one, Will Roberts (12-11) allowed just two runs over five innings, and Enosil Tejeda and Shawn Armstrong provided scoreless relief as the RubberDucks prevailed, 4-2. Armstrong worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

Justin Toole led the RubberDucks with a pair of RBI singles in game one, including an infield hit in the fifth inning off Luis Diaz (3-3) that drove in Pedroza to break a 2-2 tie. Pedroza later added an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Anthony Gallas homered in the first inning of game one, his 13th of the season and second of the series.

The RubberDucks will begin the second leg of the road trip with the opener of a three-game series at New Hampshire on Friday night at 7:05. LHP Shawn Morimando (1-4, 3.78) is the scheduled starter for Akron, while RHP Casey Lawrence (9-6, 3.23) is expected to get the ball for the Fisher Cats. The game will be broadcast on WARF 1350 AM and online at
