Around the Farm: December 7, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Note, the Puerto Rico Winter League was off on Sunday…
Dominican Winter League
Jose Ramirez (Toros del Este): For those who have noticed, Ramirez has not played since November 29th. Some have wondered if he is hurt or if he has been held out of action the past week because he might be in trade talks with Oakland. Apparently, he only had permission to play winter ball until 12/1 and is now done. He is actually at the Indians academy in the Dominican Republic working out and taking part in the Indians conditioning program with other players like Carlos Santana, Danny Salazar and others getting ready for next season.
Manny Ramirez (DH, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2-for-3, 1 R, 2B, BB, K. Ramirez is unsigned this offseason and probably far off the Indians radar, but he is always interesting to check in on. He’s a former fan favorite and Indians great who amazingly is now 41 years old. He’s having a nice showing this offseason hitting .274 with 5 HR, 21 RBI and .846 OPS in 32 games.
Venezuela Winter League
Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 3-for-6, 2B, 2 RBI, SB. He’s back. After being out for the better part of about two weeks with a minor foot injury, Aguilar returned to the lineup on Sunday for the first time since November 26th and just the second time since November 20th. He showed no signs of injury ripping three hits, playing the field and he even showed off stealing a base. I’m obviously joking about that last part, but nonetheless, it’s great to see him back out there healthy and performing well.
Anthony Gallas (RF, Aguilas del Zulia): 2-for-4, 2 R, 2 2B, K. Gallas was just 1-for-9 in his first three winter ball games with no extra base hits or multi-hit games. He not only had a multi-hit game but a multi-extra base hit game racking up his first two extra base hits in the early part of his winter ball campaign. He has recorded one strikeout in each of his four games, but what is nice to see is he also has three walks.
