Around the Farm: December 8, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Note, there were no games scheduled in the Dominican Winter League or Puerto Rico on Monday.
Mexico Winter League
Roman Pena (RF, Naranjeros de Hermosillo): 2-for-3, R, HR, RBI. This might be kind of an odd note to some, butwith a light night around winter ball this is a great opportunity to check in on an old friend of the IBI. As some may remember, Pena was a former prospect in the Indians organization who was released a few years ago in 2010. He is 28-years old now and been playing in the Mexican leagues for some time (he was born in Tijuana). He played in 103 games for Triple-A Campeche in the Mexican League this season and hit .259 with 25 HR, 68 RBI and .938 OPS. He also racked up 80 walks and 121 strikeouts, and had a .396 on-base percentage along with a .284 isolated power. I don’t know what any of it means or what he has been drinking in the down in Mexico, but it is great to see he has found a home playing baseball in Mexico and has continued his career.
Venezuela Winter League
Anthony Gallas (RF, Aguilas del Zulia): 0-for-4. After a good game on Sunday, Gallas had a tough night on Monday going hitless in four at bats. He is off to a bit of a slow start in Venezuela and is just 3-for-17 in five games, but even with the lack of much hitting or power I still like the 4:3 strikeout to walk ratio he has posted so far. I am really interested in seeing how he does in Venezuela this offseason if he gets a chance to play in 25-30 games.
Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 2-for-4, RBI. Aguilar racks up his second straight multi-hit night in just his second game back from a two week hiatus due to a foot injury. He is once again having another good winter ball showing hitting .294 with 4 HR, 18 RBI .817 OPS in 27 games. It is not quite the big power display from last offseason, but another consistent offensive showing nonetheless.
