Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues.  The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.

Carlos Santana (Leones del Escogido, 3B) - 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E - Santana's Round Robin phase comes to a screeching halt with a hitless night and his fifth error of the playoffs on a throwing miscue.  It will be interesting to see if he remains with the team through the Serie Final, which they qualified for with an 11-7 record to win the Round Robin phase.

Leones del Escogido will face the winner of a one game playoff to be played tomorrow between the Tigres del Licey and Gigantes del Cibao, who tied for second place with 9-9 records.  The schedule of games for the Serie Final (best-of-9) is as follows:

Game 1 - Licey/Cibao @ Escogido - 1/19 4:00 PM EST (ESPN3)
Game 2 - Escogido @ Licey/Cibao - 1/20 4:00 PM EST (ESPN3)
Game 3 - Licey/Cibao @ Escogido - 1/21 6:30 PM EST (ESPN3)
Game 4 - Escogido @ Licey/Cibao - 1/22 6:30 PM EST (ESPN3)
Game 5 - Licey/Cibao @ Escogido - 1/23 6:30 PM EST (ESPN3)
Game 6 - Escogido @ Licey/Cibao - 1/24 (no time or broadcast info available) IF NECESSARY
Game 7 - Licey/Cibao @ Escogido - 1/25 6:30 PM EST (ESPN3) IF NECESSARY (listed as "Game 6" by WatchESPN)
Game 8 - Escogido @ Licey/Cibao - 1/26 4:00 PM EST (ESPN3) IF NECESSARY (listed as "Game 7" by WatchESPN)
Game 9 - Licey/Cibao @ Escogido - 1/27 4:00 PM EST (ESPN3) IF NECESSARY (listed as "Game 8" by WatcnESPN)

NOTE:  WatchESPN has a "Game 9" listed as airing on 1/29 at 4:00 PM EST.  I got the game dates I used from's LIDOM scoreboard page.

Also, no word on whether ESPN3 will air tomorrow's one game playoff or not.

Roberto Perez (Indios de Mayaguez, C): 1-4 - Perez picks up his second straight start at catcher for Mayaguez and improves slightly on last night as he picked up one hit.  It is becoming painfully obvious why these starts are rare for him this winter.  With the Indios returning to meaningful games in the Serie Final, look for regular backstop Martin Maldonado to resume starting duties.

Tyler Sturdevant (Criollos de Caguas, RP): 1 IP, perfect, 2 K - Tyler's third outing of the playoffs is a welcome return to his regular season form after a couple of brutal outings to start the postseason.  Hopefully, he can use this game as a springboard to finish his winter strong (assuming he isn't recalled to the States before the Serie Final).

Both Caguas and Mayaguez will be advancing to the LBPRC Serie Final.  I refer you to my New Year's Eve Around The Farm article for the schedule (Games 1, 3, 5, and 7 will be in Caguas while Mayaguez will host games 2, 4, and 6),-2013-59423

Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, starting 1B): 3-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB - Jesus returns to RBI Machine form with a monster night at the plate.  He has been hitting much better as of late and seems to be out of his mini slump.  Since Wednesday, Aguilar is 7-14 with 2 2B, 2 HR, and 4 RBI.  He left the game in the ninth inning for a pinch runner.

Toru Murata (Caribes de Anzoategui, SP): 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R (all earned), 3 BB, 1 K - The only reason that Toru didn't take the loss in tonight's game is the fact that it more closely resembled beer league softball than winter league baseball, with the Caribes ultimately losing 14-13 to the Leones.  This outing brings his playoff totals to 11 R (all earned) on 20 H in 16.2 IP.  Hopefully, he pitches better come spring and summer.

Per Tony's comments about Jim Callis it would be interesting to know who that is playing winter ball is rated ahead of him and what their numbers are. If this guy is playing unenhanced, there is no way he is not a top 10-20 prospect at this point after the year he put up in Akron and what he's doing in a very competitive winter league down south. As Rasheed Wallace used to say "the ball don't lie".

I keep trying to temper my excitement about Aguilar, and he keeps making it harder.

Baseball America is not a fan of Aguilar. Here is what Jim Callis, formerly of BA, said of Aguilar for MLB Pipeline's Top 10 1B listing, in which Aguilar was not included as a top 10 first base prospect in all the minors: "OK power, nothing else jumps out, mild prospect but not a top 10 1B."

Also, I am doing a Top 100 this year. In fact, the countdown will soon start on the site. Just not sure about the book....though might still do it but in a different form and come out later.

baseball america sure didnt have much nice to say about the indians farm system as a whole. they totally omitted jesus aquilar's name from the entire article about our young wahoos. From april thru january he has been an RBI machine they could have at least given him some mention. Last year JRam got no mention and did a nice job even missed a level i n the development latter. However i am not hoping for aquiloar to miss a rung on the latter I am anxious to see him in columbus. Tony I know you arnt doing your top 100 this year but did you order the BA PRospect handbook. I get the almanac but no other publication. If you do receive the prospect handbook anxious to see the order they take for the top 30.

Jose Ramirez was Indians best player in winter ball last year. Jesus Aquilar is best Indians player in winter ball this year. I hope his strong showing in winter ball will transfer to AAA and eventually get him to Cleveland sometime later in the year,

I think the Indians would like to shut down Santana but I have feeling he wants to play until his team is eliminated.
