Around the Farm: November 20, 2013
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in offseason winter ball leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Venezuela Winter League
Jesus Aguilar (Leones del Caracas, 1B): 1-5, 2 K’s. While Aguilar had his fourth straight game with a hit, his slide from an exceptional start to the winter league season has continued. He’s now hitting under .200 with a sub .600 OPS in his last ten games. Still, it was a big day for Aguilar as the Indians added him to their 40 man roster.
Dominican Winter League
Erik Gonzalez (Leones del Escogido, SS): 2-4, 2 RBI’s, 1 K. Somewhat surprisingly, Gonzalez was also added to the Indians 40 man roster on Wednesday. Gonzalez snapped out of a mini-funk in what has otherwise been a strong winter showing with two more hits in this game. His average now stands at .356. On a negative note, Gonzalez did commit his eighth error.
Jose Ramirez (Toros del Este, 3B): 1-5, 2 K’s. It’s been back-to-back disappointing games for Ramirez. His average has dropped to .273 and his strikeout to walk ratio continues to be concerning (17:3). For a guy who nearly had as many walks as strikeouts in AA last year, hopefully those numbers are just an aberration.
Puerto Rico Winter League
Carlos Moncrief (Gigantes de Carolina, OF): 1-4, 1 K. Yet another player who was added to the 40 man roster by the Indians. Moncrief has yet to get on-track this winter and is yet another prospect, along with Ramirez and Gonzalez, struggling with plate discipline. Moncrief has struck out at least once in seven straight games and has 15 K’s in 45 at-bats overall.
Bryce Stowell (Criollos de Caguas, RP): 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R. Stowell entered the game with runners on second and third and no outs. He ended up allowing both runs to score and gave up one more of his own. It could have been worse, but a runner thrown out at the plate allowed Stowell to avoid any more damage. On the plus side, these are the first earned runs he’s given up this winter.
Roberto Perez (Indios de Mayaguez, C): 0-1, 1 BB, 1 K. Perez did manage to reach base for the first time this winter in this game, but he’s hitless in five at-bats to start his campaign. He also gave up two stolen bases behind the plate.
