Around the Farm: November 24, 2014
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Note, no Indians were in action in the Venezuela Winter League.
Puerto Rico Winter League
Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 2-for-4, R, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, K. Perez played in just 19 games and accrued31 at bats in winter ball last year, so he is getting a chance to play more this offseason as he is already up to 17 games played and 51 at bats with over a month still to play. Getting rostered and proving you are a Major League caliber backstop will improve your chances at regular playing time, which is great to see. The question is how long do the Indians allow him to play in Puerto Rico, though considering he did not play a lot the last few months of the season because he was the backup to Yan Gomes, he will probably play for the duration of his team’s winter ball season and into the playoffs. He needs the extra work and experience.
Dominican Winter League
Audy Ciriaco (3B, Estrelles de Oriente): 2-for-4, R, 2 K. Ciriaco has not played a lot this offseason as he has mostly filled a bench role for his Estrelles team, similar to the versatile bench role he served at Triple-A Columbus last season and will do again next season. He’s played a lot more over the past week starting five games and playing in six of the last seven days and has piled up nearly half of his at bats in his winter ball campaign in the process.
