Here is a quick recap of how the players in the Cleveland Indians' system did in fall/winter league action on Thursday November 4th:
  • Matt McBride - 1B, Gigantes del Cibao: 1-for-3, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB. Mr. Streaky is at it again. When McBride gets hot, he gets red hot and has a history of power surges. Now three straight games with a home run.
  • Cord Phelps - 3B, Peoria Javelinas: 3-for-5, R, 2B, HR, RBI, K. This was Phelps' best game in 12 AFL games to date as he hit his first home run and had two extra base hits, something he needs to do more of to be considered a more serious prospect. In his last 6 games he is now 11-for-24.
  • Jason Kipnis - 2B, Peoria Javelinas: 0-for-3, BB, K. Kipnis follows up his best AFL game on Wednesday with another 0-for, a sign he is still in an offensive funk. He needs a slumpbuster in the worst way.
  • Eric Berger - RP, Peoria Javelinas: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. A clean outing for Berger, and now six appearances without allowing an earned run and just one run overall.
  • Lucas Montero - LF, Gigantes del Cibao: 3-for-5, R, RBI. A rare opportunity to start for Montero, and he makes the most of it. Looks like he is getting 1-2 starts a week.
  • Luke Carlin - C, Aguilas Cibaenas: 0-for-2, R, BB, K. Former Indians catcher looking to make a case in winter ball to get a contract with the Indians or another team.
  • Josh Judy - RP, Aguilas Cibaenas: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Judy racks up his third save in the Dominican Republic. So far go good with just one run, four hits, and no walks allowed in 5.1 innings.
  • Ezequiel Carrera - CF, Navegantes del Magallanes: 0-for-4, R, K, SB. Carrera in a bit of a slump where in his last six games he is 3-for-23. Still more walks (8) than strikeouts (7) in 73 at bats, and has four steals.
  • Luis Valbuena - SS, Cardenales de Lara: 0-for-2, BB, CS. Make that a six pack! Valbuena has now gone hitless in six straight games, covering a span of 19 at bats. His line of .183/.310/.217 looks awfully familiar to his 2010 regular season numbers.
One quick note, infielder Jared Goedert has left his Venezuela team and returned to the states. He was only scheduled to play winter ball for about three to four weeks, but his time out there got cut short by a few days because of a sore right elbow. Also, outfielder Nick Weglarz has essentially replaced him on the roster there. He was set to play there but has been in Arizona rehabbing his thumb injury which sidelined him the last month of the season. He should start appearing in box scores soon, perhaps even tomorrow.
