Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.

Note, the Arizona Fall League was off on Sunday.

Puerto Rico Winter League

Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 0-for-3, R, BB, E, PB. Perez played in just 19 games and racked up only31 at bats last season in winter ball. Already this season in just over a week’s worth of play he has played in seven games and has 21 at bats. He’s going to continue to play regularly and get some much valued game experience. He’s a well-regarded defender, but on this night he struggled with a passed ball and an error (catcher interference).

Giovanni Soto (RP, Gigantes de Carolina): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Soto is property of the Indians, but is someone who they have to make a decision on in whether or not to protect him on the 40-man roster as he is Rule 5 eligible. With his ability and upside from the left side, it will be tough to leave him exposed, and he is making the decision hard on the Indians with a strong winter showing to date (7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 3 BB, 7 K).

J.C. Ramirez (RP, Gigantes de Carolina): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Ramirez is a minor league free agent who could very well return to the Indians as a depth bullpen arm in Triple-A next season. He had a nice year this past season and filled multiple roles at Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, and so far in five games out in Puerto Rico he has thrown 6.1 innings and allowed 4 hits, 1 run/earned, 0 walks and has 6 strikeouts.

Venezuela Winter League

Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 0-for-4. Aguilar has been relatively quiet this offseason with the bat. After a loud offseason showing last year with 22 HR, 61 RBI and 1.012 OPS in 68 games, he’s off to a very slow start hitting .246 with 2 HR, 9 RBI and .708 OPS in 15 games.

Carlos Moncrief (RF, Aguilas del Zulia): 2-for-4, 2 RBI. Moncrief stays red hot with another multi-hit game and is now working on a modest four-game hitting streak. The strikeout rate is still rather high with 23 K’s in 63 at bats, but he is drawing walks (.425 OBP) and getting hits (.333 AVG). So far this is a nice continuation to his Triple-A Columbus performance where he was really playing well the second half of the season.

Dominican Winter League

Audy Ciriaco (DH, Estrellas de Oriente): 0-for-2, K. Ciriaco is no longer property of the Indians, but he is still a free agent, so until he signs with another team we will continue to keep tabs on him. He’s had sporadic playing time this winter season getting one maybe two starts a week. He has played in 10 games but is just 4-for-19 at the plate.

Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 1-for-5, R, RBI, E. Ramirez appeared in his second straight game at second base and also his second game overall hitting second in the lineup (he’s his leadoff nine times). He’s off to a very frigid start to his winter ball season hitting just .133 (6-for-40) in 11 games.

Is Urshela hurt? I haven't seen him mentioned in ATF for a few days.
