Around the Farm: October 13, 2014
Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday’s performances by Cleveland prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday’s game.
Note, no Indians played in the Venezuela Winter League on Monday as there was only one game and no one participated. Other winter leagues will soon start up as the Dominican Winter League begins on October 17th and the Puerto Rico Winter League starts on October 30th.
Arizona Fall League
Francisco Lindor (SS, Peoria Javelinas): 1-for-5, 2B, K. The Indians only had two players active on Monday nightin fall/winter ball action, but that is going to change rather quickly as the Dominican Winter League and Puerto Rico Winter League get started over the next two weeks and more Indians players descend upon Venezuela. Lindor made his fourth start and is now 8-for-19 at the plate with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. He’s been playing every other game, so it looks like he is sharing playing time at shortstop with Kansas City shortstop prospect Raul Mondesi (yes, he is the son of THAT Raul Mondesi who won Rookie of the Year). I had a chance to speak with Lindor while out in Arizona last week and will be posting an article on him at some point this offseason.
Jordan Smith (DH, Peoria Javelinas): 1-for-4, BB, 3 K. Smith is now 5-for-21 with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in five games played. He is another player that I had a chance to sit down and talk with and will have an article soon on the site. He’s unfazed by his subpar season and really committed to going out to the AFL and putting up at least some solid numbers, and he should get the opportunity to do that as a guy who is going to play in five to six games a week and get a large number of at bats over the five to six week AFL season.
Grant Sides (RP, Peoria Javelinas): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. This was Sides third appearance in the Arizona Fall League and yet another good one for him. So far so good for him as he has totaled 3.0 shutout innings and allowed no hits, 1 walk and has 5 strikeouts. He had a nice bounce back season this year at High-A Carolina after a rough 2013 campaign, and a strong showing in the AFL should lock him in for a 2015 destination at Double-A Akron to start and a bump up in prospect status.
