Around the Farm: October 22, 2012
Around the Farm (ATF) takes a quick look at some of the daily performances by Indians prospects. This is a special fall and winter ball version of ATF that recaps all the offseason action by Indians players in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and the Caribbean Leagues. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in the game.
Here is the rundown of what Indians players in fall and winter ball did yesterday. Note, there were no games scheduled in the Dominican Winter League (they are regularly off on Monday’s) and there was only one game in the Venezuela Winter League (they are also regularly off on Monday’s).
Arizona Fall League
Tyler Holt (RF, Scottsdale Scorpions): 2-for-4, 2 K. Holt is now two weeks into his AFL season and in 9 games is hitting a solid .296/.406/.296 over 32 plate appearances. His strength is in his ability to get on base, steal some bases, provide versatility in the outfield, and play solid defense, and that is exactly what he has done so far. He has shown good plate discipline walking 5 times and striking out 5 times, but it would be nice if he could show just a smidge of power as he has yet to get an extra base hit.
Shawn Armstrong (RP, Scottsdale Scorpions): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. Armstrong walked the first batter he faced in the 8th inning but bounced back retiring the next three batters on a line out to center, fly out to right, and line out to center. Also, of the 15 pitches he threw 10 of them were strikes. He has carried over his tough showing in the regular season into the AFL as in 4 appearances he has not allowed a run in 4.2 innings and has allowed 1 hit, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Like during the regular season he has been tough to hit and score on, but he has been susceptible to some walks.
