AZL Tribe pounds Mariners, 13-7
PEORIA – The AZL Indians have lost several of their top players to promotions the past week, but that did not look to be the case last night as they pounded the AZL Mariners 13-7 last night. They scored 11 combined runs in the sixth through eighth innings to come back and stun the Mariners.
Righty Mitch Brown got his final start of the season and put forth a solid effort going five strong innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits, one walk and had six strikeouts. Estevenson Encarnacion and Breily Puerta were strong in relief pitching a combined three shutout innings to ensure Brown got the win.
The Indians fell behind early 3-0, but started their come back in the third inning. Second baseman Juan Herrera lined a one out double to center field and then rightfielder Chia-Ching Lin dropped in a single to center to score Herrera to make it 3-1.
In the fourth inning third baseman led off with a walk and then moved to second base on a passed ball. With two outs catcher Martin Cervenka smoked a line drive single to right to score Hamilton and inch closer at 3-2.
The Mariners pushed across two runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-2 after five innings, but a big six-run sixth inning put the Indians up front for good.
Shortstop Jairo Kelly led off the sixth inning with a line drive single to center, but the inning looked like it would quickly come to an end as Hamilton popped out to shortstop and first baseman Manuel Boscan grounded out to third base. But center fielder Victor DeJesus drew a two out walk and then Cervenka came through with a line drive single to right to score Herrera. Designated hitter Josh McAdams struck out swinging, but reached first base thanks to a wild pitch and DeJesus also scored on the play. Left fielder Brian Ruiz doubled to right to score Cervenka, and then Herrera doubled to right to score McAdams and Ruiz. Lin finished off the scoring with a groundball single to right to score Herrera and put the Indians up 8-5.
The Indians tacked on another run in the seventh inning. Hamilton led off with a line drive single to left and then DeJesus lined a one out single to center pushing Hamilton to third. With two outs Hamilton scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Indians had another big inning in the eighth as they scored four runs. Ruiz led the inning off with a walk and then Herrera had an infield single to the pitcher. After Lin struck out, Kelly doubled to right to push Ruiz across home plate. Hamilton followed with a single to right that scored Herrera and Kelly. Boscan lined a double to right to put runners at third and second with one out, and then Hamilton scored on a fielder’s choice groundout to third by DeJesus.
Juan Santana came on in the bottom of the ninth and struggled, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks in his one inning of work, but the Indians were well ahead and held on for the win.
The AZL Indians season comes to a close today at home against the Brewers at 10:00AM PT. Righty Kieran Lovegrove is scheduled to start for the Indians.
