DAYTON, OH - The Lake County Captains (27-23, 58-61) came right out of the gates with six runs in the first four innings and the pitching staff threw a five hit shutout to back the offense up in a 7-0 win over the Dayton Dragons (21-28, 51-68) on Wednesday night.

Lake County struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Jose Ramirez singled to right field to leadoff the ballgame. Right fielder Jordan Smith coaxed a one-out walk, moving Ramirez to second base, and then first baseman Jerrud Sabourin plated Ramirez with a RBI single.

The Captains added to their early lead with a four spot in the third inning. Catcher Alex Lavisky reached on a fielding error by Dragons’ third baseman Junior Arias and then Ramirez moved Lavisky to second with a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch and then Smith singled to score Lavisky from second base to give Lake County a 2-0 lead. Sabourin followed with an RBI single of his own, bringing home Lindor for his second RBI of the night. Designated hitter Jake Lowery tripled into the right-center field gap, plating Smith and Sabourin for a 5-0 lead.

Lavisky doubled home third baseman Leonardo Castillo in the top of the fourth inning, opening the lead to a 6-0.

The Captains added a run in the ninth inning off of reliever Lucas O’Rear. Ramirez reached with a single to center field and then Lindor was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Smith singled home Ramirez with his second RBI single of the evening to finish out the scoring at 7-0.

Captains’ left-handed starter Shawn Morimando (6-4, 3.50) threw six strong innings to pick up his sixth win. He only gave up two hits, hit one batter and struck out six. Reliever Nick Pasquale threw two scoreless innings, only allowing three hits. Antwonie Hubbard pitched a scoreless ninth, surrendering only one walk.

The Captains had nine hits as a team. Ramirez, Smith and Sabourin all added two hits each. Smith’s two RBI’s give him 62 RBI for the year.

Lake County and Dayton will resume their three game series on Thursday night. LHP Danny Jimenez (1-2, 4.84) will take the mound for the Captains and go against RHP Radhames Quezada (5-7, 3.30) for the Dragons. First pitch from Fifth Third Field is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
