Captains come through late for 3-2 win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- The Lake County Captains (20-17, 51-55) scored the winning run late in the seventh inning in a 3-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (18-19, 54-53). Lake County won their fourth straight game in the process.

West Michigan took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first. Centerfielder Chad Wright launched his third homerun of the year, a leadoff solo shot to right field.

The Whitecaps added another run with one out in the second. Right fielder Jeff McVaney reached on a fielding error by Captains’ third baseman Leonardo Castillo. Third baseman Jason King singled to right field. Designated hitter Lance Durham walked to load the bases. Left fielder Jason Krizan flew out to left field, scoring McVaney from third.

Lake County scratched back with in a run in the third inning. Designated hitter Marcus Bradley and second baseman Jose Ramirez singled back-to-back after a groundout. Shortstop Francisco Lindor drove in Bradley with a RBI single to right field. Ramirez attempted to score on a fly out by centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez, but was cut down by Wright at the plate.

The ballgame was tied at 2 in the fourth inning. Jordan Smith singled and stole second base, his sixth steal of the year. Smith came home on a RBI single by left fielder Bryson Myles. Myles has 42 RBI’s on the year.

The starter for the Whitecaps was left-hander Kyle Ryan. Ryan threw five innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. He walked none and struck out four. Reliever Michael Torrealba (4-4, 2.53) came in to pitch the sixth inning. 

Right-hander Mason Radeke matched Ryan with two runs allowed in five innings. Radeke allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits. He walked two and struck out four. Reliever Nick Pasquale (1-0, 1.80) began the sixth inning.

The Captains took the lead for good in the seventh inning. Lindor singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch from Torrealba. Rodriguez followed with a single, moving Lindor to third. Smith flew out to centerfield, plating Lindor for the winning run. Smith has a team leading 48 RBI’s for the campaign.

Reliever Daniel Bennett relieved Torrealba with a scoreless ninth inning for the Whitecaps. Torrealba took the loss, surrendering one run on five hits in three innings of work. He retired two batters via the strikeout.

Pasquale picked up his first win, throwing three scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and hit a batter. He struck out three. Enosil Tejeda retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of the year.

As a team, Lake County had 15 hits in the game, Ramirez, Lindor and Myles added three hits each. Bradley put up two hits of his own.

Lake County and West Michigan will resume the four game series on Wednesday night from Fifth Third Ballpark. LHP Elvis Araujo (4-9, 5.23) will take the ball for Lake County against RHP Marcelo Carreno (5-7, 3.42) will counter for West Michigan. First pitch is set for 7:00 Eastern time.
