Captains comeback attempt falls short in 6-5 loss
GENEVA, IL - The Lake County Captains (5-14) attempted a rally in the ninth inning of the series finale but were unable to score the go-ahead run against the Kane County Cougars (10-9) and fell 6-5.
Kane County drew first blood with two outs in the third inning off of Captains’ starter Joe Colon (1-2, 4.26 ERA). Third baseman Michael Antonio reached on a single and then stole second and advanced to third on an error by catcher Alex Monsalve. Right fielder Jorge Bonifacio doubled home Antonio, and then center fielder Lane Adams singled to center to score Bonifacio. The Cougars led 2-0 after three innings.
Second baseman Daniel Mateo hit his second homerun of the year, a solo shot, to leadoff the fifth inning. Joe Colon was replaced by reliever Rob Nixon with one out and two runners on base. Nixon walked shortstop Orlando Calixte to load the bases but got an inning ending double play from first baseman Murray Watts.
Colon pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out one.
Cougars’ starter Santiago Garrido (3-0, 1.04) only allowed two hits in the first six innings. He would pitch 6.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits. He walked one and struck out three.
Kane County scored three more runs in the sixth inning. Catcher Edul Escobar doubled to right to lead off the inning. A groundout moved Escobar to third and designated hitter Justin Trapp drove in Escobar with a sacrifice fly to center field. Mateo walked and Antonio followed with a single. Bonifacio hit his second double of the afternoon to score Mateo. Antonio scored on an Adams single to make the lead 6-0.
Reliever Grant Sides shut out the Cougars over the last two innings, only allowing one walk and striking out three.
The Captains started a rally in the ninth off of reliever Brooks Pounders. Monsalve lined a leadoff double to the left field corner, and then designated hitter Alex Lavisky walked as Monsalve advanced to third on an Escobar passed ball. Right fielder Nick Bartolone reached base on a throwing error by Pounders. Second baseman Robel Garcia drove in his fourth run of the year, scoring Monsalve. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo singled home Lavisky and first baseman Jerrud Sabourin followed with a two run single. Left fielder Todd Hankins hit a sacrifice fly to score Castillo. Shortstop Francisco Lindor represented the go-ahead run but struck out to end the game.
Castillo, Garcia and right fielder Bryson Myles led the Captains with two hits apiece.
The Captains will return to Classic Park for a six game homestand on Wednesday night at 6:30PM. The Captains will take on the Peoria Chiefs and send RHP Cody Anderson (1-0, 3.00) to the mound against RHP Michael Jensen (3-1, 1.50) for the Chiefs.
