Captains crushed by Dragons in regular season finale, 13-4

(Eastlake, OH) – Jamodrick McGruder hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning, to cap a six run frame and Dayton went on to beat the Captains 13-4. The Dragons sent 11 batters to the plate, used six hits including two homers, two doubles and two singles to score the six runs. The Dragons took the three game series from the Captains.

Ivan Castillo led off the bottom of the first inning with his fifth homerun of the season and the Captains had the early 1-0 lead.

With the score 6-1, the Dragons added on in the fourth inning. Jon Matthews singled and scored on a triple form Robert Ramirez. Ramirez scored on an RBI single from Alex Blandino and the score was 8-1 Dragons. A three run homer in the top of the sixth inning by Blandino made the score 11-1 Dragons.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bradley Zimmer hit his second homer in as many games over the wall in right field and the score was 11-2. Dayton got the run back in the top of the seventh inning, after back-to-back doubles from Ronald Bueno and Nick Benedetto and the score was 12-2.

Phillip Ervin scorched his seventh home run of the season and the fourth of the game for the Dragons and the score was 13-2 Dragons headed to the bottom of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the frame the Captains got an RBI triple from Nellie Rodriguez and a sacrifice fly from Mike Papi and the score was 13-4 Dragons headed to the ninth.

LHP Sean Brady (0-1) started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Brady pitched just two and two thirds innings and allowed six runs, four earned runs, two walks and he allowed one home run. Caleb Hamrick pitched two and one third innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, and three strikeouts. Wander Beras pitched two and two thirds innings and allowed five earned runs, on four hits a walk, two hit batters and one strikeout.  Alexis Paredes pitched the final one and one third innings of scoreless baseball for the Captains.

RHP Nick Howard (1-1) got the start for the Dragons and earned the win. Howard pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits. Howard walked one and struck out three. The Dragons used four pitchers on the game to finish things off.

The Captains playoff run begins on Wednesday September 3 at Classic Park when the Captains host the South Bend Silver Hawks in Game One of the best-of-three quarterfinal round of the Midwest League Eastern Division playoffs.  The Captains are the second half division champions and South Bend was the first half wild card winner.  Games Two and Three (if necessary) will take place in South Bend on Thursday, September 4 and Friday, September 5. 

In Game One, The Captains will send RHP Mitch Brown (8-8, 3.31) to the mound to start the game. South Bend, will counter with LHP Anthony Banda (9-6, 3.03). First Pitch will be at 7:00 PM from Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
