Captains drop series finale 4-1
DeJesus, offense can't get anything going in rubber match
FORT WAYNE, IN- The Fort Wayne TinCaps (41-24) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings en route to a 4-1 win over the Lake County Captains (21-42) on Thursday night. Fort Wayne took two out of three games to win the series.
Fort Wayne used three doubles while scoring three runs in the second inning. Shortstop Diego Goris lined a one-out double to left field. One batter later, right fielder Brian Adams doubled home Goris for a 2-0 lead. Adams scored on a RBI double by designated hitter Mallex Smith. Martinez closed out the scoring for Fort Wayne with a RBI single to plate Smith.
Weickel was the first starter to depart in the game as he exited after five shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out five to pick up his second win. Mathew Shepherd followed in the sixth inning.
Lake County broke the shutout in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Leo Castillo led off with a single, then advanced to third base on a throwing error by Tissenbaum. Third baseman Erik Gonzalez cut the deficit to three with a RBI single.
DeJesus lost his seventh game, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He walked one and fanned one. Jack Wagoner closed the game with two scoreless frames, giving up two hits.
Shepherd allowed an unearned run in two innings of relief. Lionel Campos and Chris Nunn each threw a scoreless inning to keep the Captains at bay. Nunn earned his fourth save in the game.
Fort Wayne outhit the Captains 11-7 in the game. Second baseman Yhoxian Medina led the team with two hits, including a double. Gonzalez’s RBI was his 25th of the year, a team-high.
The Captains will travel back to Eastlake to open a four game series on Friday night. The weekend series will conclude the first half. Lake County will start RHP Robbie Aviles (1-2, 7.65 ERA) and he will face LHP Miguel Sulbaran (3-2, 4.64 ERA) for the Loons. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with fireworks to follow at Classic Park.
