Captains drop twinbill to South Bend
Lake County struggles to five hits in doubleheader
SOUTH BEND, IN- The South Bend Silver Hawks (41-17) swept the doubleheader from the Lake County Captains (20-37) on Thursday afternoon. South Bend won game one 6-1 and then they came back in game two to win 5-2.
South Bend scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Sisco allowed two walks in the frame and first baseman Carter Bell drove one home with a RBI single to center field.
The Silver Hawks blew the game open in the third inning. Shortstop Andrew Velazquez reached on a fielding error by second baseman Yhoxian Medina. Velazquez stole second and moved to third when the throw sailed into center field. Right fielder Socrates Brito singled home Velazquez to make it 2-0. Brito stole second base and came home on a RBI double by third baseman Brandon Drury. Two more walks by Sisco loaded the bases with two outs. Bell struck again with a bases-clearing double to run the score to 6-0 after three innings.
Sisco took the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits in three innings of work. He walked four and struck out three. DJ Brown entered for the fourth inning.
Designated hitter Richard Stock hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot in the fifth inning to make the score 6-1. That was the final score.
Sinnery won his third game, throwing a seven-inning complete game. He allowed one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out four.
Brown finished the game with three shutout innings, allowing a double and triple. He walked two and struck out two.
Bell hit a solo home run to give the Silver Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Bell has two home runs on the season.
Martin threw three innings, surrendering one run on three hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Benny Suarez entered the game in relief.
Lake County took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Stock, playing catcher, led off the inning with a double. Medina was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up following a wild pitch by Perry. Gonzalez drove home Stock with a sacrifice fly. Paulino hit a groundball to third base. Bell threw the ball home but catcher Roidany Aguila could not catch the ball, allowing Medina to score.
The Silver Hawks regained the lead with a three-run fifth. A double, wild pitch and hit batter occurred before shortstop Pedro Ruiz singled home one run. Suarez attempted to pickoff Ruiz at first but threw the ball away, allowing another run to come home. Velazquez doubled home his first run of the year.
Perry walked the first two batters of the sixth inning before he exited the game. Henry Garcia entered the game and instigated a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout. Chris Capper entered and got a fly out to end the inning.
Perry picked up the win, throwing five plus innings, surrendering one earned run (two runs) on one hit. He walked five and struck out five.
Garcia and Capper combined to throw a perfect sixth inning of work.
Louis Head relieved Suarez in the sixth inning. Suarez gave up three runs on three hits in two innings to pick up the loss.
South Bend capped the scoring for the game with a run in the sixth. Drury walked and moved to second on a groundout. Aguila drove in Drury with a RBI single to center field.
RJ Hively worked around a late double to close out the Captains in the seventh for his 16th save.
Head allowed one run on one hit in the sixth inning with one walk and one strikeout.
South Bend outhit the Captains 7-2 in game two and 13-5 on the day. Vick added the other hit in the game.
Lake County and South Bend will conclude their four-game series on Friday night. RHP Dylan Baker (1-5, 5.02) will toe the mound for the Captains and he will take on RHP Kyle Winkler (1-0, 0.00) for the Silver Hawks. First pitch from Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
