Captains fall 2-1 in pitcher's duel

(SOUTH BEND, IN) – Tyler Green (1-2) got the win for South Bend. Green pitched a season high five and two thirds innings and allowed just five hits, he allowed one earned run and struck out six Captains. Taylor Siemens the lefty entered for South Bend and two and a third scoreless innings. He fanned two. In the ninth Matt Sample came in to earn the save for the Silver Hawks. It was Sample’s third save of the season. The final score was 2-1 South Bend.

The Silver Hawks scored first. In the bottom of the first, with two outs, Gerson Montilla hit single to center field. Montilla then took off for second base and successfully swiped his fifth base of the season. Montilla sprinted home on the double by Matt Helm. It was Helm’s 14th double of the season and RBI number 19 on the season. The score was 1-0 South Bend after one inning.

In the bottom half of the second inning, Marc Bourgeois unloaded his fourth homerun of the season down the right field line. The homer gave the Silver Hawks a two run lead through two innings. The homerun was just number 12 for the entire South Bend team.

In the fourth, Lake County cut the lead in half. Francisco Lindor, Alex Monsalve,  all singled to load the bases. Todd Hankins then hit a fielder’s choice to shortstop and that scored Lindor from third. Robel Garcia and Leonardo Castillo struck out to end the threat in the inning. The Captains managed just one run in the inning and the score after four innings was 2-1 South Bend.

RHP Felix Sterling (2-2) was saddled with the loss for Lake County. Sterling pitched five and one third innings, allowing four hits two earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Sterling gave up one homerun. That was the sixth big fly he has allowed this season. Grant Sides also pitched for the Captains. Side went 2.1 scoreless innings. Sides has now pitched 14 & 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

The Captains will conclude quick three game road trip in South Bend, Indiana. This is the first series of the season between the Captains and the Silver Hawks. The Captains will send LHP Elvis Araujo  (0-4, 2.54) to the mound. South Bend has not announced a pitcher at this time. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
