EASTLAKE – The Lake County Captains dropped an extra-inning affair with a 12-inning 7-6 loss against the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday night.

Right-hander Dylan Baker (6-5, 3.26) took the bump for the Captains to counter Cedar Rapids’ righty Christian Powell (2-3, 5.68).

Baker ran into trouble early in the second as the Kernels scored four. First baseman Max Kepler led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. With one out, designated hitter Tyler Grimes also drew a walk before catcher Michael Quesada doubled to right to plate Kepler. Cue left fielder Jeremias Pineda, who sent a shot deep over the right-field wall for his second home run of the year to score three more, giving the Kernels the 4-0 lead.

Left fielder Todd Hankins stepped up for the Captains in the third inning as he hit a solo shot to left to put the Captains on the board.

The Kernels popped one more out in the following inning off on reliever Cody Penny. That ended Baker’s day at three innings pitched, surrendering four runs on five hits, five walks and five strikeouts. Pineda greeted Penny with a lead-off double to center and scored on a single by shortstop Niko Goodrum, advancing the Kernels’ lead to 5-1.

Lake County crafted a huge inning as they rallied back to tie the game in the fourth. Center fielder Logan Vick started with a walk and first baseman Joe Sever singled before third baseman Erik Gonzalez hit a three-run bomb to dead center for his ninth home run of the season. With one out, designated hitter Richard Stock doubled and scored an RBI single by Hankins to tie the game.

Cedar Rapids stole the lead again during the sixth as Pineda drew a walk and advanced to second on a pickoff attempt. With one out, Goodrum singled home Pineda to advance the Kernels to the 6-5 edge.

Reliever Grant Sides entered the game to start the seventh, sealing Morel’s line at 2.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, a pair of walks, and three strikeouts.

The Captains leveled the score in the eighth as Stock struck out but reached third on a throwing error that trickled down the right field line. Second baseman Yhoxian Medina followed with a double to left-center to score Stock and tie the game at 6-6.

Sides tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless ball before reliever Benny Suarez held down the ninth, but the Captains couldn’t score in their share of the evening, sending the game to extra innings.

Suarez remained in the game for three scoreless innings before giving way to Jack Wagoner for the 12th. Wagoner had struggled through his last three outings and failed to convert the hold again. Pineda lined a single to left and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. With two out, second baseman Jorge Polanco singled to center to score Pineda, giving Cedar Rapids the 7-6 lead.

That was all Cedar Rapids reliever Tim Shibuya needed as he tossed a scoreless 12th, striking out two and inducing a groundout to end the game.

Next, the Captains send Luis DeJesus (3-9, 6.18) to the bump to counter Cedar Rapids lefty Josue Montanez (3-2, 5.35).
