Captains fall in slugfest, 11-8

EASTLAKE, OH- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (10-9, 54-34) used a five run fifth inning to tie the ballgame and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to defeat the Lake County Captains (9-10, 40-48) 11-8 on Wednesday night.

Right-hander Mark Williams started the game for Wisconsin. Lake County scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Francisco Lindor singled through the right side of the infield and stole second base, his 19th stolen base of the year. Center fielder Luigi Rodriguez lined a double over the left fielder’s head to score Lindor. Catcher Jake Lowery moved Rodriguez to third with a single. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin walked to load the bases with only one out. Right fielder Bryson Myles singled home Rodriguez and then designated hitter Alex Lavisky brought home Lowery on a sacrifice fly to right field. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo put a double into the left field corner, Sabourin scored on the play and Myles was thrown out at the dish.

Lake County sent right-hander Cody Anderson to the mound to start the game, and Wisconsin came within a run in the third. Rightfielder Max Walla singled to left field, and then shortstop Yadiel Rivera and center fielder Chadwin Stang loaded the bases with a single and walk, respectively. Second baseman Brandon Macias scored Walla with a sacrifice fly to right field. First baseman Nick Ramirez doubled home Rivera and Stang to make it a 4-3 game.

The Captains regained the three runs allowed in the bottom half of the frame. Rodriguez singled to right field and was erased by a fielder’s choice by Lowery. Sabourin doubled to left field and Myles followed with a two run double of his own. Myles stole third and came home when catcher Cameron Garfield threw the ball down the third base line.

Felix Sterling (3-8, 6.53) came on to replace Anderson in the fourth inning. Anderson allowed three runs on five hits in three innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Rodriguez singled home second baseman Jose Ramirez in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 8-3 game.

Wisconsin scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning off of Sterling. Macias drove home Rivera and Stang stole home plate. First baseman Nick Ramirez scored Macias with a RBI single. Garfield launched a two-run shot into the left field bleachers to tie the game at eight. The homerun was Garfield’s third of the year.

The Timber Rattlers gained the lead in the sixth inning as Macias struck again with a RBI single.

Antwonie Hubbard entered the game following Sterling in the seventh inning. Sterling surrendered six runs on eight hits during his three innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. He took the loss in the game.

Wisconsin added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Shortstop Yadiel Rivera hit his tenth homerun of the year. Stang reached on a fielding error by Castillo. He stole second and Macias had his third RBI single of the night to score Stang.

Hubbard gave up two runs on three hits during his 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one. Manuel Carmona pitched 1.1 perfect innings with one strikeout.

Manager Dave Wallace spoke about tonight’s slugfest, “Tonight, we put up some great at-bats, and we hit the ball hard all over the place.”

Myles added three hits and three RBI’s to push his average to .266. Rodriguez added three hits for his night. Ramirez had two hits of his own.

It was one of those days, and I was seeing the ball well and being able to hit the ball," Myles said.

“He’s healthy and he is an impact player," Wallace said.  "He continues to make adjustments and do all the things we ask him to do.”

Lake County and Wisconsin will resume the three game series on Thursday morning at Classic Park. LHP Shawn Morimando (3-2, 3.90) will get the start for Lake County and RHP Chad Thompson (3-2, 4.79) will oppose him. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
