DAYTON, OH - The Dayton Dragons (3-7, 39-39) broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Gabriel Rosa to take Sunday’s game by a score of 3-2 over the Lake County Captains (7-3, 34-46). The last two games of the series have been won in the ninth inning by a sacrifice fly.

The Captains opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning against southpaw Amir Garrett. Third baseman Paul Hendrix reached second on a two-base throwing error by the Dragons shortstop. Left fielder Dorssys Paulino reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Hendrix to move to third. Paulino and Hendrix executed a double steal of second and home, respectively.

Dayton rallied with a run off of Caleb Hamrick in the third. Right fielder Jonathan Reynoso was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by shortstop Carlton Daal. Second baseman Jamodrick McGruder walked to load the bases with one out. Designated hitter Jon Matthews grounded into a potential 1-2-3 double play, but the throw to first hit Matthews in the back. The throwing error allowed Daal to score.

In the fourth inning, the game was delayed for one hour and 38 minutes due to heavy rain.

Following the rain delay, both starting pitchers did not return to the game. Garrett was charged with one unearned run on no hits and four strikeouts in three innings. Hamrick gave up one unearned run on three hits and one walk in three innings. He fanned one and hit a batter.

Lefty Anderson Polanco entered for the Captains and Zack Weiss took over for the Dragons. Polanco added three scoreless innings to his scoreless streak to make it 9.2 scoreless innings since joining the Captains. He gave up two hits, two walks and struck out three. Weiss allowed one walk in three innings to keep the Captains without a hit.

Paulino singled with one out in the seventh inning for Lake County’s first hit of the ballgame.

Dayton gained the lead in the seventh against Jimmy Stokes. Rosa was hit by Stokes’ first pitch, then he stole second and third base. Catcher Joe Hudson plated Rosa with a sacrifice fly to right field. Dayton led 2-1 after seven innings.

Stokes gave up one run on one hit in one inning during his 2014 Captains debut. Trevor Frank took the mound for the eighth inning and retired the side in order.

Lake County struck late in the ninth to the game at two against Joel Bender. Center fielder Clint Frazier led off with a single but was out trying to advance to second. Catcher Eric Haase followed with a single and he scored on a RBI double by first baseman Nellie Rodriguez.

In the bottom of the ninth, third baseman Tanner Rahier led off the final frame with a double to center field. A passed ball by Haase set the table for the game-winner by Rosa.

Frank was hung with the loss, allowing one unearned run on one hit in one and one third innings. He struck out two. Bender improved to 4-0 on the year with three innings of one-run ball.

In the final four innings, Lake County only managed four hits, three singles and a double.
