EASTLAKE, OH -- The Lake County Captains couldn’t maintain a one-run lead over the Bowling Green Hot Rods as they fell 6-3.

Right-hander Robbie Aviles (0-1, 1.47) crafted another solid start for the Captains opposite Bowling Green lefty Blake Snell (2-2, 2.54), who punched out nine hitters through six innings.

The Hot Rods scored first in their share of the second inning. With one-out right fielder Ariel Soriano singled and stole second. With two-out centerfielder Yoel Araujo hit his fourth home run of the season on a line drive to left-center for the 2-0 lead.

The Captains responded in the home half of the third inning amid some Bowling Green mistakes. Left fielder Cody Ferrell singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a lineout. Ferrell scored on a double off the bat of centerfielder Clint Frazier before a pair of errors proved costly for the Hot Rods.

Captains’ third baseman Paul Hendrix tapped a ground ball that led to a fielding error by third baseman Tyler Young. Frazier tied the score on the play and Hendrix advanced to third on a missed catch at the plate by catcher Armando Araiza.

Lake County took the lead in the fifth inning as Hendrix’s hot bat lifted his fourth home run in seven games over the right field wall for the 3-1 advantage.

Reliever Kerry Doane replaced Aviles to start the seventh inning, sealing Aviles’ line at six innings pitched, yielding two earned runs on five hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Doane was greeted by Young with a one-out double, who was replaced with a pinch runner. With two out, first baseman Alexander Simon lined a single to right to score the runner, tying the game at 3-3.

The Hot Rods pulled away in the eighth inning as second baseman Kean Wong reached on a fielding error by first baseman Grant Fink. A walk and a sacrifice bunt pushed runners into scoring position, setting the table for an intentional walk to load the bases. Soriano seized the opportunity and sent a double to left that scored two before a wild pitch pushed a third run across the plate, giving Bowling Green the 6-3 lead.

That was all Bowling Green reliever Brad Schreiber needed as he tossed three innings of scoreless, hitless relief and picked up his first win of the season.

Next, the Captains celebrate Mother’s Day with an off day tomrrow on May 11. They’ll head to Fort Wayne, Ind. May 12 to open a three-game series with the TinCaps. Right-hander Dace Kime (0-5, 8.06) will receive the start for Lake County against Fort Wayne lefty Payton Baskette (0-1, 3.54).
