Captains fall to River Bandits in pitching duel, 2-1
Lake County dropped their fifth-straight game with a loss on Sunday
DAVENPORT, IA - The Lake County Captains (15-14, 42-57) had the leading run at the plate in the top of the ninth with two outs, but they could not tie the game as they fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits (14-15, 49-49) 2-1 on Sunday evening. The Captains have dropped five-straight games on the heels of a six-game winning streak.
Second baseman Paul Hendrix was on second base with left fielder Dorssys Paulino at the plate with two down. Paulino laced a single to left field and Hendrix made the turn to head home. Left fielder Ronnie Mitchell launched a line-drive throw to cut Hendrix down at the dish to end the game.
Both starting pitchers kept the other team off the board until Quad Cities got on the board in the fourth inning. First baseman Chase McDonald led off with a single and catcher Brian Holbertson followed with a single that moved McDonald to third. Designated hitter Jake Rodriguez executed a safety squeeze to score McDonald.
In the fifth inning, the River Bandits doubled the lead with back-to-back doubles by third baseman J.D. Davis and Mitchell.
Quad Cities got five shutout innings from their starter, Edison Frias, as he improved to 6-5 this season. Frias scattered three singles in his five innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. Blaine Sims entered for the sixth inning.
Captains’ starter Jordan Milbrath pitched into the sixth inning before leaving. He gave up a one-out single to second baseman Marc Wik before departing. Southpaw Wander Beras entered and Wik stole second base. Beras walked a batter but the runner was stranded at second base.
Milbrath fell to 3-10 despite pitching well on Sunday. He gave up two runs on six hits in five and one third innings. He walked three and fanned one batter.
Beras allowed one hit and two walks in one and two third shutout innings of relief work. Carlos Melo struck out the side in the eighth inning.
Lake County broke a 21 inning scoreless streak with a rally in the ninth. Right fielder Mike Papi and first baseman Nellie Rodriguez coaxed back-to-back walks with one out. Rodriguez was replaced by pinch-runner Claudio Bautista. Hendrix plated Papi with a fielder’s choice that erased Bautista. On the play, Hendrix moved to second on a throwing error. That brought the leading run to the plate with two outs.
Sims allowed one run in four innings to pick up his first save.
The Captains got five singles from five different players in the game.
The Captains will conclude the six-game Iowa road trip with an afternoon game on Monday. Lake County will send RHP Caleb Hamrick (3-5, 6.78) to the mound and the River Bandits will counter with RHP Adrian Houser (4-4, 4.84). First Pitch is at 2:00 PM from Modern Woodman Park in Davenport, IA.
