Captains fall to West Michigan, 3-1
The Captains went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, stranding 12 batters.
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Lake County Captains (9-23) could not hold on to a 1-0 early lead as the West Michigan Whitecaps (19-13) scored three unanswered runs to take the middle game of the series 3-1 on Tuesday night.
Whitecaps starter Buck Farmer, Detroit’s 5th round pick in the 2013 Draft, threw another gem against the Captains. On April 30, Farmer allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out a career-high 12 batters.
On Tuesday, Farmer was just as efficient for West Michigan. Farmer picked up his fourth win of the year, surrendering one run on six hits over six innings. He allowed three walks and fanned six batters.
The Captains jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after shortstop Paul Hendrix hit his third homerun of the year to left field.
West Michigan answered with two runs in the fourth inning against right-hander Dace Kime. Left fielder Tyler Gibson led off with a single and advanced to third on a single by shortstop Willy Adames. Catcher Bennett Pickar plated Gibson with a groundout to the mound. Kime threw a wild pitch to move the runner to third. Third baseman Brett Harrison drove home the second run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Kime took the loss, after giving up two runs on four hits in four and one third innings. He allowed three walks, hit a batter and retired three batters via strikeout. Southpaw Luis Lugo entered the game in relief.
Lugo gave up an insurance run to the home team in the seventh. Harold Castro laced a one out double to center field. Two batters later, first baseman Dominic Ficociello singled home Castro to make it a 3-1 game.
Lugo allowed one run on four hits in three and two thirds innings. Lugo tied a season-high with six strikeouts. Lugo has walked one batter in each of the last four starts.
Farmer made way to Montreal Robertson in the seventh inning. Robertson earned his fifth save of the season with three scoreless innings of work.
Center fielder Clint Frazier had his first three-hit game of the season. He had two singles and one double to go along with a walk and a stolen base. Right fielder Josh McAdams had two hits in the game as well.
Lake County and West Michigan will conclude the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon. RHP Jordan Milbrath (1-1, 1.26) will start for the Captains and will be opposed by reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week Austin Kubitza (3-0, 2.15). First pitch is set for 11:05 AM.
Notes: The Captains went 0-12 with runners in scoring position as they left 12 men on base. The Captains added INF Ivan Castillo and RHP Luis Dejesus to the roster, while RHP Alexis Paredes was assigned to the Mahoning Valley roster. Paul Hendrix currently has a six game hitting streak and has a 14-game on base streak.
