DAYTON – Mason Radeke led the Lake County Captains to a 5-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons as he tossed six innings of scoreless ball for his sixth win of the season.

Radeke (6-6, 3.52) made his 24th start for the Captains against Dayton’s right-hander Robert Stephenson (2-1, 2.74).

Left fielder Bryson Myles put the Captains on the board first in the second inning as he sent his third home run of the season over the left field wall, giving Lake County the 1-0 advantage.

Both pitchers locked in after that as they each tossed four innings of scoreless ball until Stephenson was replaced to start the sixth, securing his final line at five innings pitched, yielding one run on two hits, a trio of walks, and five strikeouts. Stephenson was replaced with Dan Jensen, who tossed a scoreless sixth before taking on water in the seventh.

Myles reached base on an error to lead off the seventh before designated hitter Alex Lavisky drew a walk. Cue third baseball Leonardo Castillo, who tripled to plate both runners. Centerfielder Zach MacPhee followed with a double to score Castillo and end the evening for Jensen. Jensen was replaced with right-hander El’Hajj Muhammad, who retired all three batters faced to end the Captains’ rally.

The Dragons crafted their rebuttal right away off of Manny Carmona, who replaced Radeke to start the inning, ending Radeke’s night at six shutout innings, surrendering just one hit and a walk while striking out six.

Carmona was greeted by centerfielder Jefry Sierra and designated hitter Joe Terry, who laced a pair of back-to-back singles respectively to start the inning. Carmona loaded the bases as right fielder Yorman Rodriguez singled and Sierra scored on a groundout by left fielder Kyle Waldrop. With one out, Carmona let one slip as he tossed a wild pitch that allowed Terry to score. Carmona struck out the next hitter before an error by Castillo at third permitted Rodriguez to cross the dish, putting the Dragons down 4-3.

The Captains took out an insurance run in the eighth as first baseman Jerrud Sabourin led off with a walk and catcher Jake Lowery singled to right. Sabourin swiped second base for his fourth steal of the season and Myles lined his second hit of the night into center to score Sabourin, advancing the Captains ahead 5-3.

The two-run lead proved to be enough for Enosil Tejeda, who entered the game to pitch the ninth for the Captains. Tejeda struck out two of the three batters he faced to retire the side in order and preserve the Captains with the 5-3 victory.

Next, the Captains come home for a four-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts. Lefty Elvis Araujo (6-9, 5.21) will toe the rubber first for the Captains on Saturday against Lansing’s righty Anthony DeSclafani (10-3, 2.91).

The Captains will be wearing special jerseys on Saturday evening that were designed by former Project Runway and Willoughby native, Joshua McKinley. The jerseys will be autographed and auctioned off during the game with the proceeds going to Captains Charities and OutRun Ovarian Cancer.
