Captains listless in loss on Friday to Silver Hawks, 6-2
South Bend doubled up Lake County in hits, 12 to 6
SOUTH BEND, IN - The Lake County Captains (9-6) were defeated by the South Bend Silver Hawks (9-5) Friday evening by the final score of 6-2.
Lake County scored the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Silver Hawk starter Blayne Weller (4-4, 4.52 ERA) hit second baseman Claudio Bautista with a pitch to start the game. After Weller struck out the next two batters he faced, first baseman Nellie Rodriguez hit a two-run home run that gave the Captains a 2-0 lead.
However, South Bend responded by tying the game in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Michael Perez reached first on a fielder's choice with one out in the inning off of Captain starter Caleb Hamrick (2-4, 6.63). After Breland Almadova singled to right to put runners on the corners with only one out, shortstop Andre Velazquez hit a single of his own that scored Perez from third and allowed Almadova to advance to third. Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley then called for a double steal where Almadova successfully stole home to tie the game at 2-2.
The Silver Hawks continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to three consecutive extra base hits. With one out in the frame, Stryker Trahan, the Arizona Diamondbacks' first round pick from 2012, hit a solo home run to right. The home run was Trahan's 12th of the season. After Trahan's home run, Westbrook and Perez hit back-to-back doubles to plate the Silver Hawks' second run of the inning. Third baseman Ryan Gebhardt then drove in Perez with a RBI single to center that gave South Bend a 5-2 lead.
Hamrick's night was over after just four innings. He took the loss after giving up nine hits, five runs, walking two, and striking out two. He was relieved by Wander Beras to start the fifth inning.
Weller, who struggled through five innings in his last start against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, pitched six quality innings for the win. After he gave up the two runs in the first inning, Weller limited the Captains to just three hits and kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
South Bend managed to add another run to its lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Designated hitter Joe Munoz led off the inning with a double to left. Munoz then scored off of two wild pitches thrown by Beras to increase the Silver Hawks' lead to 6-2.
Nickolas Sarianides secured the win for the Silver Hawks with a perfect ninth inning of relief.
The Captains will look to get back on track Saturday evening when they take on the Silver Hawks in the second game of the three-game series. Lake County is scheduled to start Dace Kime (4-9, 4.97 ERA) while South Bend's starter has yet to be determined. First pitch is set for 7:35 PM.
