EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains (20-34) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and then held off a late charge by the Dayton Dragons (24-33) to win the series finale by a final score of 6-5 on Monday night.
For the Captains, right-hander Luis Dejesus started the game as he took on Nick Travieso
for the Dragons. Travieso is the fifth ranked prospect in the Reds organization by Baseball America and he is making his Midwest League debut.
Lake County opened a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Centerfielder Logan Vick
singled and stole second with two outs. First baseman Joe Sever
walked and right fielder Anthony Santander
followed with a RBI single to right field. Santander stole second base and catcher Eric Haase
drove in two runs with a single to centerfield.
In the top of the second, third baseman Erik Gonzalez
laced a one-out triple to centerfield. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino
plated Gonzalez with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Captains held a 4-0 through an inning and a half.
Left fielder Jesse Winker
put Dayton on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homerun to right field. The homer was Winker’s eighth this season and it was Dejesus’s fourteenth homerun allowed.
Travieso came out of the game after four innings. He took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three. Wes Mugarian
entered for the fifth inning.
The Captains made a 5-1 game in the sixth inning. Santander led off with a double. Leo Castillo
drove in Santander with a single to center field.
Dayton gained a run back in the bottom of the the sixth inning. Second baseman Joe Terry
singled and advanced to second base on a groundout. Following a hit batter, right fielder Jeff Gelalich
singled home Terry to make the score 5-2.
Mugarian exited after two innings of relief for the Dragons. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out one.Alejandro Chacin
pitched the seventh inning.
Paulino reached second base on a throwing error in the seventh inning. Vick drove home Paulino with a RBI single to make the lead 6-2.
Dejesus earned his first win of the year, pitching six innings. He gave up two runs on five hits. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Luis Morel
entered for the seventh inning.
The Dragons began their late rally with two in the bottom of the seventh inning. Catcher Joe Hudson
coaxed a one-out walk. Shortstop Zach Vincej
singled and moved to second on an error by Paulino. Center fielder Beau Amaral
doubled them both home to cut the lead to 6-4.
First baseman Seth Mejias-Brean
led off the eighth with a walk. A double and a groundout brought him around to score. That would complete the scoring at 6-5.
Chacin allowed one unearned run in two innings of relief. Ben Klimesh
threw a perfect ninth inning for the Dragons.
Morel earned his first save of the season. He surrendered three runs (two earned) on four hits in a three inning appearance. He gave up two walks and struck out four.
The Captains outhit the Dragons 10-9 on the night. Santander led the team with three hits, Gonzalez, Vick and Castillo all added two hits each.
The Captains will enjoy an off day on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Lake County will be on the road for a four game series with the South Bend Silver Hawks. Lake County will send LHP Ryan Merritt
(3-4, 3.11) to the mound to start the ballgame. South Bend will counter with LHP Daniel Watts
(7-2, 3.45). First pitch is at 7:05 PM.
