Captains sunk for 9th straight loss
EASTLAKE - The West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Lake County Captains 8-5 on Wednesday afternoon in Eastlake.
The big inning was the ninth inning. The Whitecaps scored four runs in the ninth. The big hit in the inning was a one out double by Brandon Loy that gave West Michigan the lead 6-5. The Whitecaps tacked on two more and took the game 8-5. During the seven game home stand (all losses by the Captains) Lake County gave up twenty runs in the final frame.
The Whitecaps took the lead in the top of the first inning when Danry Vasquez led off the ball game with a double. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Westlake to make it 1-0. The Captains tied the game in the bottom half of the second inning on a two out RBI single by Bryson Myles that scored Nick Bartolone from third.
West Michigan had a 3-1 lead in the sixth but the Captains scored four times to take a 5-3 lead. The big hit in the inning was another clutch hit by Myles that plated two runs. Myles finished the afternoon with three RBI and has two base hits.
West Michigan scored a run in the seventh on a single by Eugenio Suarez that scored a run and made the score 5-4.
Captains starter Will Roberts (1-1, 1.93) didn’t factor into the decision. Cole Cook pitched two innings for the Captains allowing one earned runs on four hits and also struck out three. Jeff Johnson (0-1) entered the game in the ninth and took the loss after allowing four runs on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in his one inning of work.
Whitecaps starting pitcher Kyle Ryan (0-0, 5.94) did not factor in the decision as well. The Whitecaps bullpen combined to pitch 3.1 shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out four. Dan Bennett got his third save of the season and the second in the series. The Captains have now lost nine consecutive ballgames and are 0-7 at Classic Park.
The Captains hit the road to take on the Clinton LumberKings. Game one of the three game set will be Thursday at 7:30pm. The Captains will send right-hander Joe Colon (1-1, 5.19) to the mound and he will face off against LumberKings right-hander Trevor Miller (0-0, 3.00).
This will be the Captains first trip back to Clinton since the 2010 Midwest League Championship. The Captains won the series and claimed their first Midwest League Championship in team history.
