FORT WAYNE – The Lake County Captains let an early two-run lead slip away as they lost to the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Right-hander Jake Sisco
(0-1, 1.93) received the start for the Captains to face Fort Wayne righty Zach Eflin
Sisco received some quick run support in the first inning as the Captains drew a pair of back-to-back walks. Both runners advanced on a groundout and scored as first baseman Nellie Rodriguez singled to center to give the Captains the 2-0 lead.
Sisco tossed a pair of zeroes on the board through the first two innings, despite running into some trouble in the second as he loaded the bases. A quick double-play and a fly-out put a stop to the threat and Sisco escaped unscathed until the third inning, where right fielder Corey Adamson
laced a one-out double to right and advanced to third on a passed ball. As second baseman Maxx Tissenbaum
grounded out, Adamson scored to cut the Captains’ lead in half.
Right-hander Dylan Baker
(0-1, 7.00) entered the game to start the fifth inning, ending Sisco’s line at four innings pitched, relinquishing one run (unearned) on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
The TinCaps took control in the sixth inning as first baseman Luis Tejada
singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Centerfielder Brian Adams
followed with a double to left to score Tejada, and left fielder Alberth Martinez
laid down a bunt single to plate Adams, boosting the TinCaps to the 3-2 lead.
The Captains’ rebuttal was immediate in the seventh inning as they also plated two on relief pitcher Tayron Gurrero. Rodriguez led off with a walk and advanced two bags on a pair of back-to-back wild pitches. Second baseman Joe Sever
and shortstop Erik Gonzalez
drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. The control issues continued for Guerrero as catcher Martin Cervenka
drew another walk to force home Rodriguez. That ended the day for Guerrero, who was replaced with Matthew Shepherd
. Shepherd struck out left fielder Jorge Martinez
on a wild pitch, which allowed Sever to score, giving the Captains the 4-3 lead.
Adamson singled in the TinCaps’ half of the seventh with one out for his second hit of the day before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by Cervenka behind the dish. Cue third baseman Gabriel Quintana
, who singled to score Adamson and tie the game.
Fort Wayne added one more in the eighth as Adams led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Adams scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Rodney Daal
to give the TinCaps the 5-4 lead.
That was all TinCaps’ reliever Roman Madrid
needed as he entered to pitch the ninth and made quick work of the Captains to retire the side and end the game.
Next, the Captains come home for a short three-game set with the Dayton Dragons (3-7). Right-hander Luis DeJesus
(0-1, 3.48) will counter Dayton lefty Wandy Peralta
