The Lake County Captains (15-25) dominated Sunday’s game against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (24-17) and went home with a 7-5 victory.

Fort Wayne jumped out to an early lead thanks to a wild pitch on a swinging strike to Mallex Smith by starter Michael Peoples. Smith stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Corey Admonson. He came home to score the first run on a Dane Phillips single.

Peoples got himself into trouble to start off the second inning as well when he walked leadoff hitter Alberth Martinez. Martinez stole second, then scored on a Stephen Carmon double to make the score 2-0.

That's when Lake County unleashed the hounds.

Lake County catcher Ricard Stock led off the second with a double, and was quickly moved to third on an Erik Gonzalez single. Rightfielder Anthony Santander then took things into his own hands by lining a three-run shot over the left field wall to quickly give the Captains a 3-2 lead. The Captains stranded LeVon Washington at third to end the inning after he singled, then stole both second and third.

Logan Vick got things started in the third with a leadoff single, followed by a stolen base. Stock then put two more on the board with a homer to straightaway center, scoring Vick, to give the Captains a 5-2 lead.

The Captains continued to pour it on in the third. With one out, Leonardo Castillo singled, then stole second and third with Washington at the plate. #WashTime walked then stole second, putting runners on second and third with the struggling Dorssys Paulino at the plate. Paulino came through with a two-run single, giving Lake County a 7-2 lead.

Things remained there until the Felix Sterling experiment came in the game in the ninth. Sterling gave up a lead-off double to Martinez, then allowed the run to score on a one-out wild pitch. With two outs, the TinCaps Mallex Smith then doubled off of Sterling. The TinCaps were let off the hook when a Leo Castillo error allowed Corey Admonson to reach first, plating Smith for their second run. Adamson then reached second on defensive indifference and came around to score on a single by Maxx Tissenbaum to get Fort Wayne within two at 7-5. Sterling shut the door with a strike out to end the game.

The Captains wrapped up the game with two homeruns, seven stolen bases and 12 hits overall in Sunday’s game, the third game of the Captains four game series against Fort Wayne.

“I would say there’s no way we’ve played three games as well as we’ve played the last three,” said manager Scooter Tucker.

Catcher Richard Stock hit his first homerun since joining the Captains this May. Tucker said Stock is a good fastball hitter and his power is showing during batting practice. Logan Vick also had three hits, a stolen base and scored a run for the Captains.

“He’s obviously been very consistent and he hasn’t been just one dimensional. He runs the bases well, he made two nice base running decisions today, not counting the stolen bases,” said Tucker. “He’s just a solid all around player right now.”

Sunday’s game and this four game series against the TinCaps has been a turn around for the Captains according to Tucker.

“I think some guys are settling in, feeling like they belong at this level,” said Tucker. “I think we’re going to continue to improve, we can’t lose focus of what we’re doing here, the process that they’ve got to go through. We hope to continue to play well.”

Monday’s game at Classic Park is set to start at 6:30pm and is the last of the four game series against the TInCaps.
