Captains win fourth straight, top LumberKings 6-5
The Lake County Captains just keep finding ways to win games, and they continued that trend on Tuesday.
CLINTON, IOWA- The Lake County Captains (4-1) jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held off a late Clinton LumberKings (2-3) rally in a 6-5 win on the road on Tuesday night. The Captains have won four straight games after dropping the season opener.
The Captains opened the game with a three-run first inning off of LumberKings’ starter Tommy Burns. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino led off the game with a single and he scored on a RBI triple by second baseman Claudio Bautista. Catcher Eric Haase followed with a RBI double to left field. After a wild pitch, third baseman Grant Fink drove in Haase with a run-scoring single. The Captains loaded the bases with one out before Burns departed the game.
Reliever Lars Huijer entered and induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. Burns was charged with three runs on five hits in one third of an inning.
In the third inning, Lake County added another run to open up a 4-0 lead. Fink walked to open up the inning, and advanced to third on a double. Right fielder Jorge Martinez plated Fink with a sacrifice fly.
Huijer pitched into the fourth inning before getting relieved by Ramire Cleto. Huijer allowed one run on one hit in 3.1 innings of relief with three walks and two strikeouts.
Captains’ starter Mitch Brown worked in and out of trouble throughout the game before coming out of the game in the fifth inning after only allowing one run. Brown gave up two singles before Captains' skipper Mark Budzinski made a call to the pen.
Budzinski brought in righty Alexis Paredes. Paredes gave up an RBI single to left fielder Tyler O’Neill and then retired the next batter via a strikeout. Brown’s final line was 4.2 innings, six hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.
Centerfielder Cody Ferrell launched his second homerun of the season, a two-run shot to left field to open the lead to 6-1 in the sixth inning.
Captains’ reliever Matt Whitehouse cruised through the sixth inning before hitting a bump in the seventh inning. A pair of two-run doubles cut the Captains lead to 6-5 before the inning was over. Whitehouse gave up four runs in three innings.
Mark Bordonaro took the mound to start the eighth inning, replacing Cleto who threw three and one third innings of work with two runs allowed (one run earned). Bordonaro worked around three hits and a walk to keep the Captains off the board in his two innings.
Trevor Frank sat the side down in order to pick up his second save of the year and lock down the Captains fourth straight win.
Paredes picked up the win despite only facing two batters in the game. Burns took the loss after the first inning mishap.
Clinton outhit Lake County 12-10 in the game. Eight of the nine players in the lineup had a hit and two players had two hits a piece.
On Wednesday night, the Captains and the LumberKings will play the middle game of the three game series. Southpaw Luis Lugo will make his first start of the year for the Captains as he will be opposed by righty Edwin Diaz for the LumberKings. The game is scheduled for 7:30 PM at Ashford University Field.
