EASTLAKE – The Lake County Captains downed the South Bend Silver Hawks for their first extra-inning win of the season as Joe Sever touched down with a game-winning double for a 10-9 win on Wednesday night.

Right-hander Felix Sterling (3-4, 4.86) received the start for the Captains to counter Silver Hawks' righty Blake Perry (7-5, 3.97).

The Captains crafted some rare early run support in the first inning as they plated four for Sterling. Center fielder LeVon Washington led off with a single and advanced to second as shortstop Dorssys Paulino laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another single by catcher Jeremy Lucas, Washington came home on a pick-off attempt throwing error. Another error allowed first baseman Joe Sever to reach and a single by designated hitter Richard Stock scored one more. A force play brought Sever home and the Captains scored the final run of the inning on a pair of consecutive singles by right fielder Jorge Martinez and left fielder Nick Hamilton.

The lead was blown as quickly as it came as the Silver Hawks tied the game. Left fielder Alex Glenn drew a lead-off walk and swiped second before scoring on a two-out bunt that resulted in a throwing error on behalf of Sterling. After another walk, a pair of singles and another error led to another pair of runs, leveling the score at 4-4.

Sterling's woes carried into the third as he dished another trio of walks and a triple before giving way to reliever Luis DeJesus, sealing Sterling's line at 2.2 innings, yielding seven runs (three earned) on four hits, seven walks and a trio of strikeouts. A fielding error in left led to three more runs, pushing the Silver Hawks back to the lead.

DeJesus pitched the Captains out of the remainder of the inning before his squad battled back in the fourth. With one out, Washington drew a walk before Paulino and Lucas laced a pair of back-to-back singles that scored Washington. Sever also singled to plate Paulino before a sacrifice fly from Stock scored the final run of the inning to tie the game again at 7-7.

One more touched the dish for South Bend in the fifth inning on behalf of a double, sacrifice bunt and a single, but the Captains matched the Silver Hawks again in the sixth on reliever Thomas Brendel.

DeJesus remained on the bump for Lake County through the sixth inning before Anderson Polanco entered to pitch the seventh.

The teams tipped the game into extra innings until the Silver Hawks turned the scales in their favor in the 10th. Center fielder Breland Almadova reached base on a two-out throwing error by Paulino and came around to score on a triple by right fielder Socrates Brito for the 9-8 lead.

The Captains refused to retire without a fight as their plate discipline paid off in their share of the 10th. A pair of walks proved costly for reliever Henry Garcia, who loaded the bases for Sever. With a full count, Sever launched a double to left-center to score two, walking the Captains off with the 10-9 win.

The two teams accumulated 16 walks during Wednesday's game in addition to seven combined errors and 23 hits.

Next, the Captains look to lefty Ryan Merritt (6-9, 3.50) to face South Bend righty Braden Shipley, who will make his South Bend season debut.
