Carolina snaps streak with 6-2 win
LYNCHBURG, V.A.- The Mudcats proved victorious Sunday afternoon against the Lynchburg Hillcats at Calvin Falwell Field inside City Stadium. Carolina finished 6-2 over Lynchburg while snapping their six game losing streak.
Winning right-handed pitcher Cody Anderson (5-2) shut out the Hillcats tossing 6.1 innings, striking out seven and scattering four hits.
Right-hander Jarrett Miller (3-2) took the loss for the Hillcats allowing four runs on six hits over six innings.
In typical Mudcat fashion, Carolina started strong by plating two runs in the first inning. Shortstop Francisco Lindor singled on a ground ball to first base and scored off of right fielder Jordan Smith’s line drive triple to left field. The Mudcat’s lead expanded 2-0 on an RBI sacrifice fly out by designated hitter Charlie Valerio.
The score remained 2-0 until the Mudcats struck again in the in the sixth inning, doubling their initial lead. Lindor led off the inning with a double off of a fly ball to right field. Smith followed with a line drive single on hopes to score Lindor but Lindor was thrown out on the throw and Smith advanced to second. Catcher Tony Wolters homered on a fly ball scoring Smith.
The Mudcats continued to gap the lead by twos in the ninth inning. Third baseman Yhoxian Medina hit a two run RBI single to right field that scored left fielder Luigi Rodriquez and first baseman Joe Sever. Carolina led 6-0 after the top of the ninth.
The Hillcats finally hit the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth. After walking third baseman Kyle Kubitza, catcherShawn McGill doubled on a fly ball to center field that scored Kubitza. McGill advanced to third and right fielder Matt Weaver singled on a RBI ground ball to third base. The final score stood as 6-2 in favor of the Mudcats.
The Mudcats are off Monday, May 20th, but travel to Myrtle Beach to start a three game series against the Pelicans on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
